Nanocomposites of polyhydroxyurethane with nanocrystalline cellulose: Synthesis, thermomechanical and reprocessing properties

Wenming Ge et al.

Summary: A commercial novolac epoxide was reacted with CO2 to obtain a novel cyclic carbonate, which was used to prepare a PHU thermoset. Nanocrystalline cellulose (NCC) was added as a modifier to improve the thermomechanical properties of the PHU, and functionalized with poly(N-vinylpyrrolidone) (PVPy) for better dispersion. The resulting nanocomposites displayed enhanced properties, such as increased glass transition temperatures and mechanical properties, as well as good shape recovery and reprocessing capabilities.

Recent Advances in Fabrication of Non-Isocyanate Polyurethane-Based Composite Materials

Piotr Stachak et al.

Summary: Non-isocyanate polyurethanes (NIPUs) are a new class of environmentally friendly polymeric materials, synthesized through the polyaddition of cyclic carbonates and polyfunctional amines, offering excellent chemical, mechanical, and thermal stability properties. NIPUs also feature tunable properties and the elimination of hazardous chemical compounds during synthesis. While there have been numerous studies on the synthesis and properties of NIPUs, systematic information on the fabrication and processing of NIPU composites is currently lacking.

Trends in non-isocyanate polyurethane (NIPU) development

Alvaro Gomez-Lopez et al.

Summary: The transition towards safer and more sustainable production of polymers has led to a growing interest in non-isocyanate polyurethanes (NIPUs) as potential replacements for conventional materials. However, the challenges in directly replacing conventional polyurethanes (PUs) with NIPUs have been more difficult than initially anticipated. Despite significant academic research, the market size of NIPUs remains small, indicating a need for continued efforts to overcome limitations and promote industrial adoption.
