Angiogenesis, Osseointegration, and Antibacterial Applications of Polyelectrolyte Multilayer Coatings Incorporated With Silver/Strontium Containing Mesoporous Bioactive Glass on 316L Stainless Steel

Yi-Jie Kuo et al.

Summary: The main causes of failure in implant surgery are prolonged exposure and tissue ischemia, along with bacterial infection caused by the medical environment and equipment. Developing an implant coating to guide tissue growth and promote antibacterial activity can greatly reduce the medical risk.

Preparation and characterization of polyelectrolyte multilayer coatings on 316L stainless steel for antibacterial and bone regeneration applications

Pranjyan Dash et al.

Summary: A polyelectrolyte multilayer (PEM) coating was fabricated with collagen and poly (gamma-glutamic acid) (gamma-PGA) onto 316L stainless steel, loaded with vancomycin (VA) and strontium containing bioactive glass (SrBG). The films exhibited smooth and uniform surface, good wettability, and enhanced mechanical properties. Biomineralization and apatite layer formation were observed in simulated body fluids. The composite films showed antibacterial properties, excellent biocompatibility with bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells, and enhanced angiogenesis and bone regeneration ability. Thus, the PEM/VA/SrBG composite films have great potential for orthopedic implant applications.

Summary: The layer-by-layer self-assembly technique is effective in immobilizing components of the extracellular matrix onto implant surfaces, forming polyelectrolyte multilayers. Cross-linking has an influence on the physicochemical properties of the films, and collagen improves the biocompatibility of the films.
