The Functional and Application Possibilities of Starch/Chitosan Polymer Composites Modified by Graphene Oxide

Magdalena Krystyjan et al.

Summary: This study investigates the functional properties and degradation rate of bionanocomposites made of starch/chitosan/graphene oxide (GO) using a green synthesis method. It also explores the toxicity and effects on pathogenic microflora during storage of meat food products. The results indicate that the composites have weak barrier properties but are similar to biological systems. Chitosan-containing composites demonstrate good optical properties and high barrier performance, making them suitable for packaging applications. Additionally, the starch and chitosan films show relatively high biodegradability, lack toxicity, and provide a high barrier against many microorganisms, suggesting great potential for use in the food industry.

Applications of Starch Biopolymers for a Sustainable Modern Agriculture

Ashoka Gamage et al.

Summary: Protected cultivation in modern agriculture heavily relies on plastic-originated materials. However, the use of plastics can pose substantial threats to the geosphere, food security, and the environment. Mismanaged plastics in soil do not biodegrade and generate emerging pollutants. Therefore, the use of biodegradable polymers from renewable sources is a pragmatic solution for sustainable agricultural practices.

Enhancing the dispersibility of multiwalled carbon nanotubes within starch-based films by the use of ionic surfactants

Zelia Alves et al.

Summary: This study investigates the influence of different ionic surfactants on the dispersibility of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNT) within a starch matrix. Films with MWNT-SC show the best dispersibility and have the highest tensile strength and Young's modulus, while MWNT-CTAB functionalization imparts the highest antioxidant activity and electrical conductivity to the starch matrix. The properties of starch-based films can be tailored based on the physical adsorption of each surfactant on MWNT surface and/or the interfacial interaction of the surfactant with starch chains.

Summary: Biodegradable polymers (BP) are considered the materials of the future, with excellent properties comparable to commodity plastics. The lack of data on the durability of biodegradable polymer nanocomposites (BPN) has prompted a review summarizing recent literature data on environmental aging of BPN. Incorporating nanofillers into BP can improve durability, but poor dispersion may lead to faster degradation. Selected models describing the durability performance of BPN can be used to design materials with tailored degradation properties and durability.
