Loss on ignition vs. thermogravimetric analysis: a comparative study to determine organic matter and carbonate content in sediments

Mohammed Bensharada et al.

Summary: Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and loss on ignition (LOI) are commonly used techniques to determine organic and carbonate content in sediment samples. TGA is more efficient and provides accurate data with sample masses of 30-50 mg. Comparison through an unpaired t-test showed that TGA can replace LOI and has several advantages.

Pre-modification strategy to prepare a novel Zr-based MOF for selective adsorption of Palladium(II) from solution

Jiali Tang et al.

Summary: A novel metal organic framework (MOF) prepared by pre-modification was utilized as an adsorbent for recovering palladium ions in wastewater, showing high adsorption efficiency and reusability after multiple cycles. The adsorption mechanism mainly involves electrostatic interaction and chelation with N and O atoms, as well as reduction of Pd(II) to Pd(0) by N and O functional groups.

A review on conventional and novel materials towards heavy metal adsorption in wastewater treatment application

Wai Siong Chai et al.

Summary: Wastewater treatment is still a critical issue globally, and the removal of heavy metals is of utmost importance. Adsorption is the most common technique, with activated carbon being the traditional adsorbent, but facing challenges in separation and cost. Novel materials show competitiveness with excellent attributes like large surface area and high chemical inertness, presenting a promising future for heavy metal adsorption in wastewater treatment.

Facile preparation of magnetic Zr-MOF for adsorption of Pb(II) and Cr(VI) from water: Adsorption characteristics and mechanisms

Chen Wang et al.

Summary: A novel magnetic Zr-MOF material named Ni0.6Fe2.4O4-UiO-66-PEI was synthesized for the sorption of heavy metals Pb(II) and Cr(VI) in water. The material showed good thermal stability and magnetic properties, with fast sorption kinetics following the pseudo-second-order model. It exhibited good selectivity for competing ions and held fairly good binding capacities after multiple regenerations, making it a green and environmentally-friendly option for heavy metals removal.

Oral tribology, adsorption and rheology of alternative food proteins

Ben Kew et al.

Summary: Mechanistic knowledge using tribology and adsorption can help screen proteins with better lubrication, aiding in the development of new ingredient formulations for low-fat/high protein foods. Different proteins showed varying lubrication and physicochemical properties, with pea, potato, lupin, and insect proteins compared to whey protein isolate as the control. Strong correlations were found between lubrication performance and the physical characteristics of the proteins, validating surface-linked phenomena in frictional response.
