Removal of decidedly lethal metal arsenic from water using metal organic frameworks: a critical review

Khalil Ahmad et al.

Summary: Water contamination is a global issue that affects the biosphere and the lives of many people worldwide. The presence of arsenic in water is a common and toxic contaminant that poses a serious threat to humans and aquatic life. Metal-organic frameworks show promising potential as adsorbents for arsenic removal due to their stability, sorption capacities, and ecofriendly performance.

Fabrication of Polyacrylonitrile UF Membranes by VIPS Method with Acetone as Co-Solvent

Alexey Yushkin et al.

Summary: For the first time, a systematic study was conducted on the replacement of low-volatility solvents N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) or dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) with the high-volatility solvent acetone in the casting solution of polyacrylonitrile (PAN). The presence of acetone in the casting solution was found to have a positive effect on the performance of ultrafiltration membranes fabricated via vapor-induced phase separation (VIPS).

Creation of highly stable porous polyacrylonitrile membranes using infrared heating

Alexey A. Yushkin et al.

Summary: Highly stable porous membranes made of commercial PAN were developed for high pressure application in aprotic solvents. IR heating treatment for 5 minutes at 170 degrees C was shown to render the PAN membranes insoluble in aprotic solvents. The study indicated that the membrane structure and properties remained unchanged after IR treatment, with adjustment of treatment time and temperature affecting the chemical stability of the membranes.

Thermally induced phase separation in semicrystalline polymer solutions: How does the porous structure actually arise?

Konstantin Pochivalov et al.

Summary: This study reexamines thermally-induced phase separation in semicrystalline polymer-solvent systems to understand the formation of membrane precursors beyond existing concepts. It proposes the inclusion of a curve describing the solubility of low-molar-mass liquid in amorphous regions of semicrystalline polymers in phase diagrams. Through experimental analysis, it is found that cooling and solvent extraction processes typically lead to the formation of capillary-porous bodies with different sized pores.

Separation of Archipelago- and Continent-Type Asphaltenes on Ultrafiltration Membranes

A. A. Yushkin et al.

Summary: The study explored the use of polyacrylonitrile membranes for the selective separation of continent-type asphaltenes prone to aggregation from their archipelago molecules. The membranes were effective in reducing deposit formation and viscosity in oil transportation and processing. Moreover, the filtration process resulted in agglomerates being retained instead of individual species, allowing for efficient separation of the components.
