Flexible transparent wood enabled by epoxy resin and ethylene glycol diglycidyl ether

Hangchuan Cai et al.

Summary: Transparent wood was prepared by alkaline pretreatment, bleaching treatment, and impregnation of epoxy resin, resulting in a flexible material with high transparency and outstanding mechanical properties. The research found that the delignification degree and the ratio of epoxy resin addition significantly influenced the optical and mechanical properties of the flexible transparent wood, with an optimal sample achieving high transmittance, ultra-high haze value, excellent flexibility, and mechanical strength. This study broadens the potential applications of transparent wood in flexible wearable devices and materials.

Transparent wood developed by introducing epoxy vitrimers into a delignified wood template

Kaili Wang et al.

Summary: Transparent wood (TW) with programmable shape-memory ability was developed by introducing transparent, refractive index-matching, and intelligent epoxy-based vitrimers into delignified wood. The resultant TW exhibited programmable shape-memory properties, such as shape-recovery, shape-programming, shape-erasing, and re-programming, making it a multi-functionalized and efficient material for various applications.

Photostable transparent wood composite functionalized with an UV-absorber

Priya Bisht et al.

Summary: Transparent wood composite (TWC) is a promising material with good optical and mechanical properties, suitable for applications in smart windows, energy efficient building elements, and solar energy concentrators. The study found that TWC is highly sensitive to UV light exposure, showing rapid photo-discolouration, chemical degradation, and a decrease in optical transmittance, requiring the incorporation of UV absorber to reduce degradation for outdoor applications.

One-step peracetic acid pretreatment of hardwood and softwood biomass for platform chemicals production

Chandan Kundu et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that thermally-assisted peracetic acid pretreatment of lignocellulosic biomass effectively removes lignin with negligible loss of carbohydrates, achieving a 90% delignification rate. It significantly improves biomass digestibility, increasing glucan content, especially when conducted under mild temperature conditions.
