Potential use of waste eggshells in cement-based materials: A bibliographic analysis and review of the material properties

Dawei Yang et al.

Summary: The disposal of waste eggshells has negative impacts on the environment and human health. However, eggshell powder has the potential to be used as a partial substitute in cementitious materials. This study conducted a scientometric analysis to evaluate the use of eggshell powder in cementitious materials and discussed their mechanical and durability properties. The study highlighted the various factors influencing the performance of cementitious materials, such as CaO content, particle size, and replacement level of eggshell powder. It also suggested improving the grinding and calcination process to obtain better eggshell powder.

Summary: This work introduces a novel sensing system that uses eggshells as a substrate for the detection and semiquantitative determination of antibiotics in aquaculture waters. The system is simple, inexpensive, and does not require equipment. By modifying the eggshell powder and observing the color change after contact with antibiotics, the concentration of the antibiotic can be correlated. The method shows promise as a green approach for antibiotic monitoring.

Mateusz Barczewski et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of introducing low-cost inorganic fillers into flame-retarded ammonium polyphosphate polyethylene composition. The results showed that the addition of fillers increased the stiffness and hardness of the composite, while only slightly decreasing its tensile strength. The cone calorimeter measurements revealed a synergistic effect between the fillers and flame-retardant polyethylene, reducing the peak heat rate release by 60%.

Thermal Stability of Nanosilica-Modified Poly(vinyl chloride)

Jolanta Tomaszewska et al.

Summary: The study investigated the thermal stability of PVC with 1 wt % of spherical porous nanosilica prepared by roll milling at various processing times. The addition of porous nanosilica was found to improve thermal stability by absorbing HCl gas produced during dehydrochlorination reaction, resulting in minor color changes and lower evolution of hydrogen chloride gas. The results showed that TGA measurements were not sensitive enough to detect PVC degradation at processing conditions below 220 degrees C.
