Preparation and characterization of microcrystalline cellulose from olive stones

Mohamed S. Hasanin et al.

Summary: In this study, microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) was prepared from olive stones and characterized. The results showed good agreement in most properties between olive stone MCC and commercially available MCC, and the MCC prepared with sulfuric acid had higher surface area while the MCC prepared with hydrochloric acid had higher thermal stability.

Biobased and biodegradable polymers in a circular economy context: Understanding quercetin and gallic acid impacts on PHBV thermal properties

Chloe Bonnenfant et al.

Summary: Biodegradable polymers are a solution to mitigate plastic pollution, and their ability to be recirculated before biodegradation is important for maximizing their economic value. The thermal stability of these polymers, which is crucial for their recycling and reuse, can be influenced by natural phenolic additives. In this study, the impact of two phenolic additives, quercetin and gallic acid, on the thermal stability of a microbial biodegradable polyester was investigated. The results showed that the structural evolution and thermo-mechanical stability of the polymer were affected by the type and percentage of polyphenols, with quercetin improving the structural integrity and thermo-mechanical stability, while gallic acid accelerated degradation.

Predicting the elastic properties of hemp fiber - A comparative study on different polymer composite

Rajib Bhowmik et al.

Summary: This study presents a comparative analysis on the prediction of elastic properties of hemp fiber reinforced polymer composite. The results indicate that the hemp fiber epoxy composite predicts higher elastic properties compared to the hemp fiber polystyrene composite, with higher longitudinal Young's modulus and transverse Young's modulus values at a fiber volume fraction of 80%.

Life Cycle Assessment of Olive Pomace as a Reinforcement in Polypropylene and Polyethylene Biocomposite Materials: A New Perspective for the Valorization of This Agricultural By-Product

Gabriela Espadas-Aldana et al.

Summary: The main environmental impact of olive oil production lies in the disposal of residues such as pomace and water vegetation. Olive stone flour can be utilized as filler for polymeric composites, with a life cycle assessment focusing on the manufacturing process of such composites. The study reveals that the twin-screw compounding of the olive stone fraction, with the polymeric matrix and coupling agent, is the hotspot of the process, with human health being the most affected damage category.

Mechanical, physical, thermal and morphological properties of polypropylene composite materials developed with particles of peach and cherry stones

Mario Nunez-Decap et al.

Summary: This study compared novel composite materials based on peach stone particles and cherry stone particles with a wood plastic composite material, and found that the peach stone particle composite had similar mechanical and physical properties to the wood plastic composite, while the cherry stone particle composite had lower properties. The penetration of the polypropylene matrix into the peach stone particles improved the mechanical anchoring of the composite materials.
