Effectiveness of Covid-19 Vaccines over a 9-Month Period in North Carolina

Summary: mRNA vaccines were highly effective in preventing covid-19 associated hospital admissions related to the alpha, delta, and omicron variants. Three vaccine doses were required for protection against omicron, while two doses provided protection against delta and alpha variants. Omicron variant showed lower disease severity compared to delta variant but still resulted in morbidity and mortality. Vaccinated patients had lower disease severity than unvaccinated patients for all the variants.

Decline of Humoral and Cellular Immune Responses Against SARS-CoV-2 6 Months After Full BNT162b2 Vaccination in Hospital Healthcare Workers

Summary: Clinical trials and real-world evidence have shown that COVID-19 vaccines are effective against severe disease and death, but the durability of protection is still unknown. A study on healthcare workers who received the BNT162b2 mRNA vaccine found that antibody levels decreased between 3 and 6 months after full vaccination, particularly in individuals over 60 years old. T-cell immune responses also declined over time, although some individuals showed an increase in T-cell response. Ongoing follow-up is needed to understand the long-term protection provided by these vaccines.

On the other hand, age, male sex, and social disadvantage were associated with an increased risk of death.

Summary: A study conducted in the United States Veterans Health Administration found that healthcare personnel (HCP) at higher risk of COVID-19 infection included those working in hospitals with over 15% inpatient COVID-19 test positivity, nursing staff, non-Hispanic Black, Hispanic or Latino HCP, and HCP who were Veterans. Additionally, male sex, age over 65 years, and Veteran status were identified as significant risk factors for death after COVID-19 infection. Robust national surveillance testing methods are needed to accurately monitor HCP COVID-19 infections and deaths for improving HCP safety.

Although the effectiveness of two doses is at least as great as protection afforded by prior natural infection, there are significant differences in the dynamics of immunity after the second dose between BNT162b2 and ChAdOx1.
