Robustness of the thermal Hall effect close to half-quantization in α-RuCl3

J. A. N. Bruin et al.

Summary: A fractionalized excitation is observed in quantum spin liquids, providing a way to observe the quantum spin liquid state. The thermal Hall conductivity in alpha-RuCl3 exhibits approximately half-integer quantization, especially in a plateau-like parameter regime for high magnetic fields and low temperatures. Cooling to low temperatures suppresses the thermal Hall conductivity.

Theory of the Kitaev model in a [111] magnetic field

Shang-Shun Zhang et al.

Summary: This study reveals the existence of a gapped spin liquid phase in the antiferromagnetic Kitaev model at intermediate magnetic fields through the use of a variational approach. Furthermore, the characteristics and critical behaviors of this phase are investigated, providing valuable insights into the nature of the spin liquid.

Antiferromagnetic Kitaev interaction inJ eff=1/2 cobalt honeycomb materials Na3Co2SbO6 and Na2Co2TeO6

Chaebin Kim et al.

Summary: We have identified two new honeycomb cobalt-based systems, Na3Co2SbO6 and Na2Co2TeO6, with antiferromagnetic (AFM) Kitaev interaction through experiments and analysis. The spin-orbit excitons observed in both compounds support the presence of a spin-orbit entangled state. We also found that a generalized Kitaev-Heisenberg Hamiltonian can accurately describe the spin-wave excitations in both compounds.

Evidence of a Phonon Hall Effect in the Kitaev Spin Liquid Candidate ?-RuCl3

E. Lefrancois et al.

Summary: RuCl3 undergoes a transition to a state with antiferromagnetic order below a temperature of about 7 K, but this order can be suppressed by applying an external magnetic field. The existence of a quantum spin liquid phase just above a certain magnetic field is still uncertain, but recent observations suggest the presence of itinerant Majorana fermions.

Vacancy-Induced Low-Energy Density of States in the Kitaev Spin Liquid

Wen-Han Kao et al.

Summary: In this study, the introduction of random vacancies in the Kitaev model is shown to lead to a power-law upturn in specific heat measurements of H3LiIr2O6, and new insights into the system's response are proposed. The origin and nature of vacancies have minimal impact on the significant accumulation of low-energy Majorana modes, which can be readily detected.

Oscillations of the thermal conductivity in the spin-liquid state of α-RuCl3

Peter Czajka et al.

Summary: Magnetic spin liquids cannot achieve magnetic order even at millikelvin temperatures due to conflicting constraints on each spin, leading to intense interest in the resulting quantum spin-liquid state with unusual excitations; Observations of oscillations in the thermal conductivity of alpha-RuCl3 in a specific magnetic field range reveal periodic behavior, closely related to the temperature-induced exponential decrease in oscillation amplitude and emergence of anomalous planar thermal Hall conductivity above approximately 2 K.

Scanning Tunneling Microscopy as a Single Majorana Detector of Kitaev's Chiral Spin Liquid

Masafumi Udagawa et al.

Summary: In this study, a local detection scheme for the Majorana zero mode (MZM) carried by a vison in Kitaev's chiral spin liquid (CSL) using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) is proposed. By introducing a single Majorana into the system through hole-charge injection, the Majorana interacts with the MZM to form a stable composite object, leading to split peaks in the differential conductance that are comparable to the Majorana gap in CSL and observable in experiments.

Half-integer quantized anomalous thermal Hall effect in the Kitaev material candidate α-RuCl3

T. Yokoi et al.

Summary: Recent reports have shown the presence of half-integer thermal quantum Hall conductance in the two-dimensional honeycomb material alpha-RuCl3, even in magnetic fields without out-of-plane components. The measured field-angular variation of the quantized thermal Hall conductance in alpha-RuCl3 has the same sign structure as the topological Chern number of the pure Kitaev spin liquid, indicating that the non-Abelian topological order persists in the presence of non-Kitaev interactions.

Variational study of the Kitaev-Heisenberg-Gamma model

Shang-Shun Zhang et al.

Summary: This study computes the low-energy excitation spectrum and dynamical structure of the Kitaev-Heisenberg-Gamma model, revealing the physical reasons for the asymmetric stability of Kitaev spin liquid phases and the formation of bound states by fractionalized excitations in specific regions. The condensation of these bound states drives certain phase transitions induced by Heisenberg and Gamma interactions, providing a simple explanation for the magnetically ordered phases surrounding each Kitaev spin liquid phase.
