Unravelling groundwater contributions to evapotranspiration and constraining water fluxes in a high-elevation catchment

Anna C. Ryken et al.

Summary: Despite the complexity of high-elevation catchments, this study successfully estimated water and energy fluxes and examined the role of groundwater in the water balance. The results demonstrate the significance of groundwater-fed ET in the overall water budget.

Mapping liquid water content in snow at the millimeter scale: an intercomparison of mixed-phase optical property models using hyperspectral imaging and in situ measurements

Christopher Donahue et al.

Summary: The distribution and quantity of liquid water in snow are important for snow hydrology and avalanche forecasting. However, detecting and quantifying liquid water in snow is still a challenge. In this study, we determined the optimal mixed-phase optical property model for simulating wet snow reflectance in a controlled laboratory environment. The externally mixed model performed the best, with a 1% uncertainty in retrieving liquid water content (LWC).

Unravelling groundwater contributions to evapotranspiration and constraining water fluxes in a high-elevation catchment

Anna C. Ryken et al.

Summary: This study estimated water and energy fluxes in high-elevation, complex systems using eddy covariance tower to better understand ET estimates and calculate overall water and energy budgets, including losses from groundwater. The results show that groundwater-fed ET is a significant component of the water balance.

In situ effective snow grain size mapping using a compact hyperspectral imager

Christopher Donahue et al.

Summary: High-resolution mapping of effective snow grain radius (r(e)) using near-infrared hyperspectral imaging (NIR-HSI) can quantify spatial variability of r(e) and visualize water percolation in the snowpack. Results show post-melt grain coarsening in snow samples, quantified by changes in r(e) distributions. The NIR-HSI method produces similar mean r(e) values as a field spectrometer but slightly lower values compared to X-ray computed microtomography (micro-CT), indicating potential for assessing snow metamorphism.

Implementation and Evaluation of a Unified Turbulence Parameterization Throughout the Canopy and Roughness Sublayer in Noah-MP Snow Simulations

Ronnie Abolafia-Rosenzweig et al.

Summary: By introducing a new physics scheme into the Noah-MP model to explicitly parameterize turbulence in the roughness sublayer, improvements in simulating snow water equivalent have been observed, especially in closed shrubland sites. However, the model's performance degrades in deciduous broadleaf forest sites.

What Causes the Unobserved Early-Spring Snowpack Ablation in Convection-Permitting WRF Modeling Over Utah Mountains?

Cenlin He et al.

Summary: The study conducted process-level snowpack analyses of a widely used convection-permitting weather research and forecasting modeling product for the contiguous U.S., revealing mechanisms causing unobserved early-spring snow ablation over Utah mountains. The analyses showed that the unobserved snowpack ablation in the model was driven by multiple strong melting events during mid-February to late-March, with contributions from enhanced downward sensible heat flux and ground solar radiation absorption.

SNICAR-ADv3: a community tool for modeling spectral snow albedo

Mark G. Flanner et al.

Summary: The SNICAR model has been expanded and improved with new features such as non-spherical ice particles and a library of optical properties. The model shows good agreement with measurements of snow albedo from seven studies, but further research is needed on snow algae and the influence of liquid water on spectral snow albedo.

Summary: The study characterized the snow albedo decay over Hurd Peninsula, Livingston Island, Antarctica from 2000 to 2016. It found that the albedo decay typically starts in late September and lasts for about 96 days.
