Associations between adolescents watching pornography and poor mental health in three Swedish surveys

C. G. Svedin et al.

Summary: This study examines the association between watching pornography and poor mental health in three repeated cross-sectional surveys in Sweden. The findings suggest that there is no consistent association between poor mental health and watching pornography. However, watching deviant pornography is associated with poor mental health among boys in two surveys and among girls in one survey. Other factors such as mother's unemployment, parenting style, and experiences of sexual abuse are consistently and strongly associated with poor mental health.

M. A. T. T. H. I. A. S. BRAND et al.

Summary: This article proposes meta-level criteria for classifying potential addictive behaviors as other specified disorders due to addictive behaviors. These criteria include clinical relevance, theoretical embedding, and empirical evidence. Studies suggest that problematic forms of pornography use, buying and shopping, and use of social networks may fit into this category.

The Association between the Quantity and Severity of Pornography Use: A Meta-analysis

Lijun Chen et al.

Summary: This meta-analysis found a positive, moderate relationship between the quantity of pornography use and problematic pornography use, with the strength of the relationship varying significantly across different theoretical frameworks, QPU indicators, and sexual cultural contexts. Frequency was identified as a more robust quantitative indicator of PPU, and in conservative countries, QPU showed a stronger association with self-perceived PPU. Further research on cross-cultural (conservative/permissive) comparisons is warranted.

A Review of Behavioral Interventions for Compulsive Sexual Behavior Disorder

Nicholas C. Borgogna et al.

Summary: This article reviews recent behavioral interventions for compulsive sexual behavior disorder (CSBD) and finds that each intervention is associated with symptom reduction. However, the formats and sample sizes of the interventions vary, and most studies utilize small samples. Therefore, more clinical trials are needed in the future to determine preferred approaches.

Are sexual functioning problems associated with frequent pornography use and/or problematic pornography use? Results from a large community survey including males and females

Beata Bothe et al.

Summary: This study explored the associations between frequency and problematic pornography use with sexual functioning problems among males and females. It found that problematic use had moderate positive associations, while frequency had weak negative associations with sexual functioning problems. Therefore, when examining sexual outcomes, both problematic and frequency of pornography use should be considered separately.

Validity and Reliability of the Short Version of the Problematic Pornography Consumption Scale (PPCS-6-A) in Adolescents

Beata Bothe et al.

Summary: This study validated a short, theory-based measure of problematic pornography use (PPU) among adolescents and identified a potentially at-risk group using the Problematic Pornography Consumption Scale for adolescents (PPCS-6-A). The scale demonstrated strong psychometric properties, including factor structure and measurement invariance, and accurately identified adolescents at risk of PPU. This tool could be useful in future studies for better understanding the prevalence and characteristics of adolescents' PPU.

Pornography Use and Holistic Sexual Functioning: a Systematic Review of Recent Research

K. Camille Hoagland et al.

Summary: The review found a complex relationship between pornography use and sexual functioning and satisfaction. While mere pornography use itself is generally not associated with sexual functioning, self-reported problematic use of pornography consistently related to more sexual functioning problems. Overall, the results suggest that a nuanced understanding of the effects of pornography on sexual wellbeing is needed, with the context and perceptions about pornography use being crucial in predicting whether or not pornography has negative effects.
