Heavy metal concentration and its distribution analysis in urban road dust: A case study from most populated city of Indian state of Uttarakhand

Lalita Bisht et al.

Summary: The study found high pollution levels of heavy metals in road dust in the city of Dehradun, with lead and zinc being the most contaminated metals. Commercial zones and national highways show higher levels of HM pollution, leading to a deterioration in road dust quality.

Spatial distribution, pollution levels, and risk assessment of potentially toxic metals in road dust from major tourist city, Dehradun, Uttarakhand India

Vidhu Gupta et al.

Summary: This study investigates the concentration, contamination, spatial distribution, ecological and health risks associated with heavy metals (HMs) in road dust samples from Dehradun city, India. The results show that some HMs have concentrations higher than background values, and Cd, Pb, Cu, and As are classified as highly contaminated. Children are more susceptible to HM contamination, and ingestion is the primary exposure pathway. The lifetime cancer risk (LCR) for Cd, Cr, Ni, and As is greater than 1 x 10(-6), indicating the possibility of cancer development.

Lead and cadmium exposure network in children in a periurban area in India: susceptibility and health risk

Suchismita Das et al.

Summary: The study revealed that the school environment and students' diet are the main contributors to metal exposure in children. Chronic potential risks from exposure to lead and cadmium were identified, with cadmium posing a significant cancer risk. This could pose a significant threat to children exposed at an early age.

Toxic Mechanisms of Five Heavy Metals: Mercury, Lead, Chromium, Cadmium, and Arsenic

Mahdi Balali-Mood et al.

Summary: Industrial activities of the last century have led to increased human exposure to heavy metals such as mercury, lead, chromium, cadmium, and arsenic, resulting in acute or chronic poisonings through water, air, and food. These heavy metals accumulate in the body, causing toxic effects on various tissues and organs by disrupting cellular events and inducing oxidative stress. Common mechanisms of action of these metals include ROS generation, inhibition of antioxidant defense, enzyme inactivation, and selective binding to specific macromolecules, some leading to genomic instability and carcinogenicity through DNA damage and oxidative stress. Despite current knowledge, heavy metal poisoning incidents remain prevalent, necessitating preventive measures and effective treatment, possibly including chelation therapy.
