The use of Mount Etna volcanic ash in the production of bricks with good physical-mechanical performance: Converting a problematic waste product into a resource for the construction industry

Giuseppe Cultrone

Summary: The addition of volcanic ash affects the firing process and properties of bricks, delaying the appearance of new phases and increasing compactness, but reducing strength. However, adding volcanic ash can improve the resistance of bricks to corrosion caused by salt crystallization.

Elemental composition and natural radioactivity of refractory materials

Francesco Caridi et al.

Summary: The study analyzed the elemental composition and radioactivity concentration of refractory samples in use by an oil refinery using XRF and high-resolution gamma-ray spectrometry. It highlighted the high presence of Zirconium and compared the activity concentrations of 226Ra, 232Th, and 40K with other locations. The dose rate and annual effective dose equivalent for workers were also estimated and compared with legislative limits.

IMA-CNMNC approved mineral symbols

Laurence N. Warr

Summary: This contribution presents the first International Mineralogical Association (IMA) Commission on New Minerals, Nomenclature and Classification (CNMNC) approved collection of 5744 mineral name abbreviations by combining four methods of nomenclature based on the Kretz symbol approach. The collection incorporates 991 previously defined abbreviations for mineral groups and species and presents a further 4753 new symbols that cover all currently listed IMA minerals. Adopting IMA-CNMNC approved symbols is considered a necessary step in standardising abbreviations by employing a system compatible with that used for symbolising the chemical elements.

Fingerprint of PGI Mantova Cucumis melo by ICP-MS and Chemometric Analysis

Antonio F. Mottese et al.

Summary: This study analyzed yellow and green varieties of Cucumis melo fruits to compare the selective uptakes of inorganic elements among different cultivars. By using Cluster analysis, Principal component analysis, and Canonical discriminant analysis, the research aimed to ensure fruit quality and healthiness, support producers, and assist customers in safe food purchase. The results showed a strong relation between fruit origins and trace element contents, with effective discrimination power provided by the CDA approach.
