Anabaenopeptins from Cyanobacteria in Freshwater Bodies of Greece

Sevasti-Kiriaki Zervou et al.

Summary: This study investigated the occurrence and structural variety of anabaenopeptins (APs) in cyanobacterial blooms and cultured strains from Greek freshwaters. The results revealed the widespread presence of APs in bloom samples, with multiple congeners co-occurring. Only one strain from the cultured samples was found to contain APs.

Novel cyanobacterial metabolites, cyanopeptolin 1081 and anabaenopeptin 899, isolated from an enrichment culture dominated byWoronichinia naegeliana(Unger) Elenkin

Beata Bober et al.

Summary: Cyanobacteria produce various secondary metabolites, including two new oligopeptides identified in this study. While these peptides did not show acute toxic effects on crustaceans at high concentrations, they led to a deterioration of physiological state. Identifying and characterizing cyanopeptides in aquatic environments is crucial due to limited knowledge in this area.

Mining of Cyanobacterial Genomes Indicates Natural Product Biosynthetic Gene Clusters Located in Conjugative Plasmids

Rafael Vicentini Popin et al.

Summary: The research indicates that cyanobacterial plasmids may play a role in dispersing natural product biosynthetic gene clusters, including pathways producing toxins, through horizontal gene transfer. This has implications for biotechnology, water management, and public health risk assessment. Future studies should investigate in vivo conjugation and the final products of these biosynthetic pathways in plasmids through chemical analyses.

Anabaenopeptins: What We Know So Far

Patrick Romano Monteiro et al.

Summary: Cyanobacteria are microorganisms with diverse secondary metabolites, including an important class of peptides called anabaenopeptins which possess inhibitory activity and may be toxic and adaptive to certain aquatic organisms. This review aims to explore key features related to anabaenopeptins, such as their structural diversity, occurrence, biosynthetic steps, ecological roles, and biotechnological applications.
