Exposures to Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons and Their Mitigation in Wildland Firefighters in Two Canadian Provinces

Nicola Cherry et al.

Summary: The study aimed to characterize polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the breathing zone and on the skin of wildland firefighters and assess their contribution to urinary 1-hydroxypyrene (1-HP). The results showed that improved skin hygiene or discretionary use of an N95 mask did not reduce absorption.

Health risks and mitigation strategies from occupational exposure to wildland fire: a scoping review

Erica Koopmans et al.

Summary: Due to the lack of long-term evidence, the connection between wildland fire exposure and specific health outcomes remains unclear. It is necessary to prioritize research on the mental and physical health impact of occupational exposure to wildland fire.

The Wildland Firefighter Exposure and Health Effect (WFFEHE) Study: Rationale, Design, and Methods of a Repeated-Measures Study

Kathleen M. Navarro et al.

Summary: The WFFEHE study aimed to investigate occupational exposures and health effects among wildland firefighters over a two-year period. The study collected data and conducted various assessments to identify preventive measures and reduce risks for wildland firefighters. Conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in collaboration with other agencies, this research faced challenges in the wildfire environment but is anticipated to have significant implications for protecting firefighters' health and guiding future research needs.

Exposure and Absorption of PAHs in Wildland Firefighters: A Field Study with Pilot Interventions

Nicola Cherry et al.

Summary: This study found evidence of exposure to PAHs in the air and on the skin of many, but not all, fire crews. Results from pilot interventions suggest that enhanced skin hygiene could reduce absorption post fire where PAHs had been accumulated on the skin, and that masks could be effective in reducing PAH inhalation exposure. Interventions to reduce PAH absorption are supported by the pilot work reported here and warrant further evaluation across a full fire season.

Exposure to Particulate Matter and Estimation of Volatile Organic Compounds across Wildland Firefighter Job Tasks

Kathleen M. Navarro et al.

Summary: Wildland firefighters are exposed to particulate matter and volatile organic compounds while suppressing wildfires, with exposure varying across crew types and job tasks. Strategies are needed to reduce smoke exposures for these firefighters, especially for type 1 crews and those performing direct suppression tasks.
