Spatiotemporal Analysis of Droughts Over Different Climate Regions Using Hybrid Clustering Method

Kiyoumars Roushangar et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the spatiotemporal patterns of drought in different climate regions of Iran during the period of 1951-2016 using Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) and a hybrid methodology of MODWT and K-means. It was found that shorter term droughts were more frequent and severe in the northern parts and regions with higher drought frequency had higher energy values. The study also revealed a direct relationship between energy values and mean SPIs, drought severity, and peak for shorter term droughts, while an inverse relationship was found for longer term drought.

Hybrid point and interval prediction approaches for drought modeling using ground-based and remote sensing data

Kiyoumars Roushangar et al.

Summary: This study utilized hybrid models, including data preprocessing, permutation entropy, and artificial intelligence, for point and interval predictions of the Standardized Precipitation Index in Northwest Iran. The results showed that these models outperformed single models, with the hybrid PE models improving modeling accuracy by up to 40-55%.

Deriving drought indices from MODIS vegetation indices (NDVI/EVI) and Land Surface Temperature (LST): Is data reconstruction necessary?

Fei Xie et al.

Summary: The study finds that data reconstruction can significantly enhance the performance of drought indices for drought detection, but it is not always necessary. HANTS is the most effective reconstruction method, and the Vegetation Condition Index (VCI) and Vegetation Health Index (VHI) perform best among the drought indices.

Remote sensing assessment of changes of surface parameters in response to prolonged drought in the arid zone of central Iran (Gavkhoni playa)

Mahnaz Shiran et al.

Summary: Remotely-sensed NDVI and LST are key indicators for assessing environmental impacts of climate changes in arid regions. This study focused on identifying the spatiotemporal changes of LST and NDVI in the Gavkhoni playa before and after a drought event, using a combination of cellular fractal model and wavelet analysis to analyze the relationships between surface properties and changes in LST and NDVI. The results showed significant changes in LST and NDVI values associated with the onset of drought conditions, particularly in central playa areas with extreme topographic complexity. Wavelet analysis confirmed the relationship between surface fractal dimension patterns and anomalies in LST and NDVI variations, highlighting the integrated application's ability to quantify the relationship between land surface properties and spatial variations of LST and NDVI in changing environmental conditions.
