Simultaneous biological removal of nitrogen and phosphorus from secondary effluent of wastewater treatment plants by advanced treatment: A review

Qi Zhou et al.

Summary: This review summarizes the key to improving the water quality of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) - simultaneous removal of nitrogen and phosphorus. The composition of secondary effluent from municipal WWTPs is introduced, and three main treatment processes for simultaneous nitrogen and phosphorus removal are summarized. Their performances, mechanisms, influencing factors, and microbial community structures are analyzed. The advanced removal of nitrogen and phosphorus by different technologies is compared and summarized. The challenges and future prospects of simultaneous removal of nitrogen and phosphorus technologies for secondary effluent are proposed.

Electrochemical reduction of nitrate in a catalytic carbon membrane nano-reactor

Jing Ma et al.

Summary: This study introduces a porous tubular carbon membrane as the electrode with catalysts for nitrate removal reactions. The achieved nitrate removal rate is significantly higher than other methods, with high conversion and selectivity to nitrogen. The use of Cu-Pd bimetal catalysts inside the membrane enhances activity and selectivity, leading to improved nitrate removal efficiency.

Enhancing the efficiency of nitrogen removing bacterial population to a wide range of C:N ratio (1.5:1 to 14:1) for simultaneous C & N removal

Shaswati Saha et al.

Summary: This study aims to enhance the COD tolerance of the biological nitrogen removal process by associating methanogens with nitrogen removing bacterial populations. A new microbial system called 'Methammox' was developed for simultaneous COD and ammonia removal at different C:N ratios. The results show that Methammox achieved comparable ammonia and COD removal rates to the nitrogen removing bacterial and methanogenic populations.

Nitrate Removal by Donnan Dialysis and Anion-Exchange Membrane Bioreactor Using Upcycled End-of-Life Reverse Osmosis Membranes

Amaia Lejarazu-Larranaga et al.

Summary: This work explores the application of reverse osmosis upcycled membranes in Donnan Dialysis and ion exchange membrane bioreactor processes for nitrate removal from water. Spectroscopy techniques were used to evaluate the performance and changes of the membranes, and the technical feasibility of using upcycled AEMs was validated. This membrane recycling concept can also be applied for the removal and recovery of other target negatively charged species.
