New insights into different surfactants' impacts on sludge fermentation: Focusing on the particular metabolic processes and microbial genetic traits

Jingyang Luo et al.

Summary: Different categories of surfactants have been found to have positive effects on volatile fatty acid (VFA) production during waste activated sludge (WAS) fermentation. The presence of surfactants improves solubilization and hydrolysis steps, leading to enhanced acidification. Surfactant conditioning enriches functional microorganisms associated with VFA generation and increases the expression of key genes involved in the process. The bioavailable substrate improvement, functional bacterial enrichment, and metabolic activity upregulation induced by surfactants jointly contribute to VFA promotion during WAS fermentation.

Medium-chain fatty acids production from carbohydrates-rich wastewater through two-stage yeast biofilm processes without external electron donor addition: Biofilm development and pH impact

Zisha Zhang et al.

Summary: This study developed a two-stage technology for producing MCFAs from carbohydrate-rich wastewater without the addition of external electron donors. In Stage I, organics were converted into ethanol using a yeast biofilm reactor. Polyurethane foam was found to be the most suitable carrier for yeast biofilm development. In Stage II, the yeast biofilm reactor effluent was used for MCFA production at different pH. The results showed that pH significantly affected the selectivity of MCFA production.

Anaerobic Dynamic Membrane Bioreactor Development to Facilitate Organic Waste Conversion to Medium-Chain Carboxylic Acids and Their Downstream Recovery

Shilva Shrestha et al.

Summary: Platform chemicals like medium-chain carboxylic acids (MCCAs) can be produced through chain elongation in anaerobic mixed-culture bioreactors from organic waste streams. An anaerobic dynamic membrane bioreactor (AnDMBR) was developed to evaluate MCCA production and achieve solid-liquid separation with a high efficiency, while also impacting microbial activity and contributing to chain elongation.

Microbial adaptation and response to high ammonia concentrations and precipitates during anaerobic digestion under psychrophilic and mesophilic conditions

Estefanny Quispe-Cardenas et al.

Summary: This study investigated microbial adaptation to high ammonia concentrations during anaerobic digestion under psychrophilic and mesophilic conditions. It found that diversity reduced under psychrophilic conditions when adaptation occurred successfully, while the microbial community became more diverse under mesophilic conditions with ammonia inhibition. The study also identified Methanocorposculum as a robust hydrogenotrophic methanogen at high ammoniacal concentrations under psychrophilic conditions for the first time.
