Membrane Fouling: Microscopic Insights into the Effects of Surface Chemistry and Roughness

Mao Wang et al.

Summary: Membrane fouling is a major obstacle in membrane-based separation processes, and it strongly depends on membrane surface chemistry and roughness. Increasing surface roughness on alumina surfaces reduces fouling, while on graphene surfaces it enhances fouling. The interaction between foulant and membrane surface plays a crucial role in determining the fouling behavior.

Juan Jiang et al.

Summary: A novel anti-fouling membrane (N-TiO2@PVDF) was developed by implanting a N-TiO2 photocatalyst into a PVDF membrane. The N-TiO2@PVDF membrane showed excellent anti-fouling performance and hydrophilicity, with higher water flux and pollutant rejection rate compared to PVDF. It also exhibited photocleaning function and the results showed that the degradation of organic pollutants by hydroxyl radicals (•OH) was the dominant mechanism.
