The evidence for and against reactivation-induced memory updating in humans and nonhuman animals

Kristen H. Jardine et al.

Summary: Systematic investigation of reactivation-induced memory updating has been ongoing since the 1960s. Numerous studies have shown that memory reactivation can make previously consolidated memories fragile and susceptible to modification. However, inconsistencies in replicating established effects have plagued the field. This paper reviews these studies and suggests that the failures to replicate reflect a complex and delicately balanced memory modification system that requires fine-tuning to enable adaptive memory updating while limiting inaccurate modifications. A systematic approach, integrating positive and null findings, is necessary to gain a comprehensive understanding of long-term memory storage and the potential for using modification processes to treat mental disorders driven by maladaptive memories.

Context, attention, and the switch between habit and goal-direction in behavior

Mark E. Bouton

Summary: Habits are behaviors that are automatically evoked by antecedent cues and are performed without their goal in mind. They may transition from goal-directed actions to habits after extended practice. However, habits are not permanent and can be restored to goal-directed actions through environmental manipulations. Habit learning causes retroactive interference in a context-dependent way, inhibiting goal-direction but not erasing it completely.
