Heart rate variability in relation to cognition and behavior in neurodegenerative diseases: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Kathy Y. Liu et al.

Summary: The review found that higher heart rate variability (HRV) in patients with neurodegenerative diseases was associated with better cognitive and behavioral scores. This relationship was not influenced by age or cognitive status, suggesting that HRV may be a marker of self-regulatory processes in these conditions. Further research is needed to explore this association with neuropsychiatric symptoms and neuroimaging methods.

Heart rate variability in patients with dementia or neurocognitive disorders: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Ying-Chih Cheng et al.

Summary: Heart rate variability is a useful measure for evaluating neurological and psychiatric disorders like dementia. Patients with dementia, especially those with Lewy body dementia and mild cognitive impairment, show lower parasympathetic activity compared to healthy controls. The meta-analysis results suggest that gender may influence the effect size of heart rate variability in dementia patients.

Does Heart Rate Variability Biofeedback Enhance Executive Functions Across the Lifespan? A Systematic Review

Doriana Tinello et al.

Summary: This systematic review aimed to summarize the effects of heart rate variability biofeedback (HRV-BF) on executive functions across the lifespan, finding significant positive effects on attention, particularly in populations facing stress, professional athletes, war veterans, individuals with ADHD, and clinical older patients. Efficacy was not related to duration, intensity, or technical equipment, and also showed positive impacts on the general population. Further standardized protocols and consistent reporting of effect sizes could contribute to establishing the relevance of HRV-BF biofeedback interventions in cognitive enhancement.

Phasic heart rate variability and the association with cognitive performance: A cross-sectional study in a healthy population setting

Kathrin Hilgarter et al.

Summary: This study found a significant association between phasic heart rate variability (SDNN) and verbal episodic memory performance, regardless of age and sex. The results suggest that reduced heart rate variability is linked to decreased cognitive function and may indicate early sympathovagal imbalance.

Diagnosis and Treatment for Mild Cognitive Impairment: A Systematic Review of Clinical Practice Guidelines and Consensus Statements

Ya-Xin Chen et al.

Summary: This study compared and harmonized recommendations for the diagnosis and treatment of Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) based on current clinical practice guidelines. Neuropsychological testing and biomarker assessments were common recommendations for MCI diagnosis, while there were differing opinions on pharmacological interventions. Non-pharmacological interventions like physical activity and cognitive interventions were widely recommended. More research is needed on the diagnosis and treatment of MCI.

Summary: This study evaluated the differences between using PEP and LVET in calculating cardiac autonomic balance and regulation, finding that LVET is a more suitable measure compared to PEP. Future research should consider using LVET to calculate measures of cardiac autonomic activity.

Noradrenaline in the aging brain: Promoting cognitive reserve or accelerating Alzheimer's disease?

Mara Mather

Summary: Engaging in novel and mentally challenging activities may promote brain health and prevent Alzheimer's disease, but could also come with risks as more active brain regions accumulate more pathology over time. Noradrenaline released during such activities may have protective effects, but can also accelerate the production and accumulation of amyloid-beta and tau in the brain.

Summary: The lower HRV parameters may be related to the occurrence of POD, and this correlation is more significant in young-old and male patients. ANS disorders and rhythm abnormalities reflected by HRV changes may represent a possible mechanism that promotes POD.
