The influence of forest proximity to harvesting and use of provisioning ecosystem services from tree species in traditional agroforestry landscapes

Lucky Makhubele et al.

Summary: Traditional agroforestry landscapes are important for conserving biodiversity and supporting rural livelihoods. However, unsustainable utilization of ecosystem services from these landscapes leads to biodiversity loss. This study examines the relationship between distance and socio-ecological determinants and the consumption behavior of provisioning ecosystem services. The results show that people prefer to harvest ecosystem services from closer distances.

Reduction of global warming potential vis-a-vis greenhouse gases through traditional agroforestry systems in Rajasthan, India

S. B. Chavan et al.

Summary: Tree-based systems in arid regions of India play a crucial role in livelihood and environmental security by offsetting greenhouse gas emissions through carbon sequestration. A study in Rajasthan estimated the area occupied by agroforestry and found that major tree species include Prosopis cineraria, Tecomella undulata, and Capparis decidua, impacting the mitigation potential and carbon sequestration of the agroforestry system. At a state level, agroforestry was found to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 1.42 million tonnes annually, contributing significantly to carbon footprint reduction and the goals of the Paris Agreement.

Species composition, diversity, and carbon stock in trees outside forests in middle hills of Nepal

Shes Kanta Bhandari et al.

Summary: Based on a comprehensive survey of 78 households and their farms in the Tanahun district of Nepal, this study assessed the species diversity, richness, and carbon storage in Trees outside forests (TOF). The findings showed that species diversity in TOF varied significantly with factors such as land area, livestock numbers, caste, and well-being class. Efforts to measure and monitor TOF regularly are crucial for understanding their contributions to local livelihoods and the national carbon budget, as well as for considerations in forestry systems and REDD+.

Conservation of Plant Diversity in Agroforestry Systems in a Biodiversity Hotspot Region of Northeast India

Yashmita-Ulman et al.

Summary: In Assam, India, traditional agroforestry systems like homegardens, tea gardens and agrisilvicultural systems were studied for plant species composition. Homegardens had the highest species richness, followed by agrisilvicultural systems and tea gardens. The results suggest that these systems, especially homegardens, harbor rich plant diversity and should be promoted as conservation models with management interventions.

More people, more trees: A reversal of deforestation trends in Southern Ethiopia

Jean-Yves Duriaux-Chavarria et al.

Summary: This study in Southern Ethiopia examines the transition from forest-grassland to cropland mosaic, revealing both the benefits and drawbacks such as increased food production and income but also reductions in livestock and fuelwood availability. Efforts to restore lost ecosystem services through reforestation pathways, including the establishment of Eucalyptus woodlots and natural regeneration, were found to be positively associated with homestead proximity, suggesting a unique 'more people, more trees' approach to forest restoration in this predominantly agricultural landscape.
