Community perceptions about mangrove ecosystem services and threats

Filipa Afonso et al.

Summary: By surveying the perspectives of three communities on the use, threats, and conservation of the ecosystem, this study found that the locals' understanding of the value and threats of mangroves differs from the literature. The study highlights the importance of considering local values and traditions in the utilization of ecosystem resources.

Fish Assemblages in a Small Mangrove System on Principe Island, Gulf of Guinea

Mariana Cravo et al.

Summary: The study conducted in the Praia Salgada mangrove stand on Principe Island found that fish distribution varied significantly according to the season and mangrove zone, with three times more fish caught per day during the rainy season compared to the dry season. The mangrove stand serves as a nursery function for several of the studied fish species, most of which are of commercial interest, especially the juveniles.

Mangrove carbon stocks in Pongara National Park, Gabon

Carl C. Trettin et al.

Summary: Mangroves in Pongara National Park, Gabon were inventoried for carbon stocks using remote sensing data to stratify the area based on canopy height, revealing significant differences in biomass among height classes but not in soil carbon density. Soils accounted for over 84% of the ecosystem carbon stock, with a total estimated carbon stock of 40,588 Gg C within the park. This study demonstrates the importance of using remote sensing data and spatial decision support systems for large-scale field inventories of mangrove carbon stocks to support national reporting and sustainable management practices.
