Wood Decay Detection in Norway Spruce Forests Based on Airborne Hyperspectral and ALS Data

Michele Dalponte et al.

Summary: This study used airborne hyperspectral data to detect wood decay in Norway spruce forests. The results showed that wood decay could be detected, although the accuracy varied depending on the dataset.

Species selection in areas subjected to risk of root and butt rot: applying Precision forestry in Norway

Ana Aza et al.

Summary: This study examines the economic benefits of converting rot-infested Norway spruce stands to Scots pine. It proposes a Precision forestry method to determine the optimal tree species at a pixel level in heterogeneous stands. The findings suggest that shifting to Scots pine is more profitable when rot levels are high, and the method increases net present value in almost every stand.

Detection of Root, Butt, and Stem Rot presence in Norway spruce with hyperspectral imagery

Benjamin Allen et al.

Summary: This study aimed to use remote sensing to detect rot in spruce forests in Norway. The results indicate that an airborne hyperspectral imager can accurately classify the presence or absence of rot in a single-tree-based framework.

Economic utility of 3D remote sensing data for estimation of site index in Nordic commercial forest inventories: a comparison of airborne laser scanning, digital aerial photogrammetry and conventional practices

Lennart Noordermeer et al.

Summary: Forest productivity, expressed as site index (SI), is crucial in forest planning. In Nordic commercial forest inventories, SI is commonly estimated with a combination of aerial image interpretation, field assessment, and data from previous inventories. Airborne laser scanning (ALS) and digital aerial photogrammetry (DAP) data can also be used for SI estimation, with direct methods using bitemporal ALS and DAP data showing the best accuracy and cost efficiency.

Effect of root and butt rot uncertainty on optimal harvest schedules and expected incomes at the stand level

Ana Aza et al.

Summary: Root and rot (RBR) caused by Heterobasidion parviporum and Heterobasidion annosum damages Fennoscandian spruce stands. Harvesting earlier in RBR-infected stands is often not justified due to low gains. In the absence of reliable information on infection severity, advancing harvests may not be beneficial.
