Biomineralization: Integrating mechanism and evolutionary history

Comparative Single-Cell Transcriptomics Reveals Novel Genes Involved in Bivalve Embryonic Shell Formation and Questions Ontogenetic Homology of Molluscan Shell Types

Summary: Mollusks are known for their diverse body plans, including external armor. Previous studies have shown that the gene set involved in shell formation is highly taxon-specific. In this study, the genetic toolbox involved in embryonic and larval shell formation in the quagga mussel was analyzed using single cell RNA sequencing. Significant differences in genes expressed during embryonic and larval shell secretion were found, suggesting the fast-evolving nature of these shell types. The research also found that some genes expressed in the embryonic shell field of the mussel lack an ortholog match with other metazoans. The study raises questions about the lineage-specific or conserved nature of genes involved in conchiferan protoconch formation.

Fossil evidence unveils an early Cambrian origin for Bryozoa

Summary: Bryozoans, also known as ectoprocts or moss animals, are aquatic, primarily sessile, filter-feeding lophophorates that construct an organic or calcareous colonial exoskeleton. Fossils of Protomelission gatehousei from the early Cambrian of Australia and South China have been identified as potential stem-group bryozoans, pushing back the origin of the phylum Bryozoa by approximately 35 million years and aligning it with other skeletonized phyla in the Cambrian Age 3. This discovery reconciles the fossil record with molecular clock estimations of an early Cambrian origin and subsequent Ordovician radiation of Bryozoa following the acquisition of a carbonate skeleton.
