Hybrid retrieval of crop traits from multi-temporal PRISMA hyperspectral imagery

Giulia Tagliabue et al.

Summary: The recently launched and upcoming hyperspectral satellite missions have opened new opportunities for vegetation trait retrieval. In this study, a hybrid retrieval workflow was developed and tested using hyperspectral data from the PRISMA satellite. Crop traits were accurately mapped using this approach, demonstrating the potential of spaceborne imaging spectroscopy for crop monitoring.

Evaluation of Hybrid Models to Estimate Chlorophyll and Nitrogen Content of Maize Crops in the Framework of the Future CHIME Mission

Gabriele Candiani et al.

Summary: The European Space Agency (ESA) is planning to launch the Copernicus Hyperspectral Imaging Mission (CHIME) in the next few years, which will provide a large amount of hyperspectral data for research in various fields including agriculture and food security. This study applied the hybrid approach (HYB) and its variant (HAL) to evaluate the retrieval of crop traits using CHIME-like data. The results showed that HYB was reliable at canopy level but failed at leaf level, while HAL improved retrieval accuracy at both levels. The promising results support the feasibility of operational retrieval of chlorophyll and nitrogen content in the future CHIME mission.

PROSPECT-PRO for estimating content of nitrogen-containing leaf proteins and other carbon-based constituents

Jean-Baptiste Feret et al.

Summary: A new PROSPECT-PRO model was developed to accurately differentiate nitrogen-based constituents from carbon-based constituents and estimate foliar protein content from optical properties of vegetation. The model performed well across various plant samples and showed promising potential for involvement in precision agriculture and ecological applications.

Airborne hyperspectral imaging of nitrogen deficiency on crop traits and yield of maize by machine learning and radiative transfer modeling

Sheng Wang et al.

Summary: The study shows that using hyperspectral imaging can accurately estimate critical crop traits, such as nitrogen, chlorophyll, and photosynthetic capacity, and evaluate the impact of nitrogen deficiency on crop yield. By combining process-based and data-driven approaches, it is possible to predict crop traits more effectively, facilitating precision agricultural management.

Green LAI Mapping and Cloud Gap-Filling Using Gaussian Process Regression in Google Earth Engine

Luca Pipia et al.

Summary: Gaussian process regression (GPR) has shown to be a competitive machine learning regression algorithm for Earth observation, with unique properties such as filling gaps in optical imagery and generating cloud-free products. By integrating GPR into the Google Earth Engine (GEE), large-scale processing of satellite data and generation of vegetation products can be achieved.

A Survey of Active Learning for Quantifying Vegetation Traits from Terrestrial Earth Observation Data

Katja Berger et al.

Summary: The current increase in spatiotemporally explicit data streams from satellite-based Earth observation missions provides opportunities for global vegetation monitoring. Active learning heuristics offer a pathway for fast inference of vegetation variables using hybrid retrieval approaches. Studies have shown that optimized AL training data sets outperform models trained on randomly sampled data sets, with Euclidean distance-based diversity method being the most efficient AL technique. This approach can improve regression accuracy, speed up processing time, and reduce model size for machine learning algorithms.

Supporting operational site-specific fertilization in rice cropping systems with infield smartphone measurements and Sentinel-2 observations

Francesco Nutini et al.

Summary: This work establishes an operational approach to increase nitrogen use efficiency in top-dressing fertilization for rice cropping systems by utilizing crop modeling, Sentinel-2 imagery, and smartphone app. The workflow implemented in the 2018 growing season showed promising outcomes in real farming conditions, allowing for a reduction of applied fertilizer and an increase in both yield and nitrogen use efficiency.

Hyperspectral imagery to monitor crop nutrient status within and across growing seasons

Nanfeng Liu et al.

Summary: Imaging spectroscopy is a valuable tool for monitoring nutrient status and predicting yield of potatoes across cultivars, growth stages, and growing seasons. Ordinary least-squares regression models showed poor predictions, while partial least-squares regression models performed well using different spectral regions. Cross-season models exhibited some bias and require further optimization.

Forward new paradigms for crop mineral nutrition and fertilization towards sustainable agriculture

Gilles Lemaire et al.

Summary: The traditional approach of mineral nutrition and fertilization decisions for crops has led to over-fertilization and undesirable environmental impacts. A new plant-based diagnosis method using critical N dilution curve concept has been successfully introduced for crop nitrogen nutrition management. This approach allows real-time monitoring of crop nitrogen status to determine fertilizer requirements, providing a more sustainable and efficient crop fertilization management option for farmers.
