Conservation of Ptilostemon greuteri (Asteraceae), an endemic climate relict from Sicily (Italy): State of knowledge after the discovery of a second population

Salvatore Pasta et al.

Summary: Ptilostemon greuteri is an endangered and poorly studied woody plant species in the Mediterranean Basin, particularly endemic to Sicily, Italy. This study aims to investigate and conserve the species by providing updated information on its distribution, conservation status, biology, and ecological requirements. Field surveys and drone imagery were used to estimate the range of the populations, refine the conservation status assessment, and update the distribution pattern. Preliminary results suggest that local topographic and mesoclimatic factors play a key role in the persistence and survival of P. greuteri.

The evolution of insular woodiness

Alexander Zizka et al.

Summary: Insular woodiness (IW), the transition from herbaceousness to woodiness, is a distinctive feature of island floras. Previous studies have proposed several drivers of IW, including competition for sunlight, drought, increased lifespan, and reduced herbivory. This study identified 1,097 insular woody species on 375 islands and inferred at least 175 evolutionary transitions on 31 archipelagos. Structural equation models revealed the correlation between insular woody species richness and favorable climate, drought, and island isolation. The results highlight the importance of archipelagos as natural laboratories for studying convergent evolution.
