Global burden of bacterial antimicrobial resistance in 2019: a systematic analysis

Christopher J. L. Murray et al.

Summary: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) poses a significant threat to global human health, and this study provides the most comprehensive estimates of AMR burden to date. By estimating deaths and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) associated with bacterial AMR in 204 countries and territories in 2019, the study highlights the impact of resistance and the leading pathogen-drug combinations contributing to it.

Synergic dual phototherapy: Cationic imidazolyl photosensitizers and ciprofloxacin for eradication of in vitro and in vivo E. coli infections

Rafael T. Aroso et al.

Summary: This study investigates the influence of cationic imidazolyl-substituted photosensitizers and light on the activity of ciprofloxacin for inactivation of Escherichia coli. The results demonstrate that the optimized dual phototherapy protocol using these photosensitizers can reduce the amount of photosensitizer and ciprofloxacin required for full E. coli inactivation, and the combination therapy is superior to monotherapy in both in vitro and in vivo studies.

Recent advances of carbonyl olefination via McMurry coupling reaction

Anthony Bongso et al.

Summary: McMurry coupling reaction utilizes low-valent titanium reagents and carbonyl compounds to generate olefins. In the past five years, McMurry reagents have found wide synthetic applications in intermolecular and intramolecular coupling reactions, tandem coupling reactions, and keto ester coupling reactions of carbonyl compounds. The resulting products include natural and non-natural compounds, such as strained olefins and unusual molecules, which have potential applications in nanomaterials, pharmaceuticals, electronic materials, and other fields. The advantages, scope, limitations, and improvements of the McMurry coupling reaction, including high functional group compatibility, McMurry reagents substitution, and other treatments, have also been discussed.

Pandemics Throughout History

Jocelyne Piret et al.

Summary: Throughout history, infectious diseases with pandemic potential have emerged regularly, including major events like the plague, cholera, flu, SARS, and MERS. Many of these diseases are zoonotic in nature, transmitted to humans through increased contact with animals. Understanding the mechanisms of pathogen transmission is crucial for prevention, and traditional public health measures like isolation, quarantine, and border control are still being used to combat the COVID-19 pandemic. Global surveillance programs and new technologies are essential for rapid detection and response to emerging infectious threats.

Photodynamic disinfection and its role in controlling infectious diseases

Rafael T. Aroso et al.

Summary: Photodynamic therapy is gaining attention as a response to the shortage of new antibiotics and the increase in drug resistant infections, with a focus on the efficacy of photosensitizers and affordability of light sources to expand applications in managing infectious diseases. Success in the management of infectious diseases using photodynamic therapy will depend on the effectiveness of photosensitizers and availability of efficient treatments.
