Genetic variation in haemoglobin is associated with evolved changes in breathing in high-altitude deer mice

Catherine M. Ivy et al.

Summary: Genetic variants in haemoglobin associated with high-altitude adaptation in deer mice were found to also be linked to breathing phenotypes that enhance oxygen uptake in hypoxia, showing unexpected effects of adaptive variation in Hb on physiology beyond its traditional function in oxygen transport.

Altitude acclimatization, hemoglobin-oxygen affinity, and circulatory oxygen transport in hypoxia

Jay F. Storz et al.

Summary: In mammals and other air-breathing vertebrates at high altitude, adjustments in blood hemoglobin content and/or affinity can mitigate the effects of arterial hypoxemia. However, the optimal values of these traits in hypoxia are still debated, as the acclimatization responses in lowland mammals are often not aligned with the phenotypic changes in high-altitude natives. This review highlights experimental studies that provide insights into the combination of hematological changes in hypoxia.

A New Homotetramer Hemoglobin in the Pulmonary Surfactant of Plateau Zokors (Myospalax Baileyi)

Jimei Li et al.

Summary: This study identified a novel heme-containing protein, named gamma(4)-like, in the pulmonary surfactant of plateau zokors. The protein has a higher affinity to oxygen and increases the oxygen-dissolving capability, which benefits the zokors in obtaining oxygen in the low-oxygen environment.

The adaptive benefit of evolved increases in hemoglobin-O2 affinity is contingent on tissue O2 diffusing capacity in high-altitude deer mice

Oliver H. Wearing et al.

Summary: The study found that increasing the oxygen affinity of hemoglobin can improve blood oxygenation in hypoxic conditions but does not increase maximal oxygen consumption. Mathematical modeling showed that the effects of hemoglobin's oxygen affinity on oxygen consumption depend on the capacity for oxygen diffusion in active tissues.
