Cytotoxic Activity ofBoesenbergia rotundaExtracts against Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma Cells (HK1). Cardamonin, aBoesenbergia rotundaConstituent, Inhibits Growth and Migration of HK1 Cells by Inducing Caspase-Dependent Apoptosis and G2/M-Phase Arrest

Mohammed Khaled Bin Break et al.

Summary: The study showed that the constituent cardamonin from Boesenbergia rotunda exhibited high cytotoxic activity against nasopharyngeal carcinoma cells, inhibiting cell migration and inducing apoptosis through activating the extrinsic pathway. This demonstrates cardamonin's potential as an anticancer agent.

Cell-Free Expression of a Plant Membrane Protein BrPT2 From Boesenbergia Rotunda

Yvonne Jing Mei Liew et al.

Summary: Expression of a membrane-bound prenyltransferase BrPT2 from Boesenbergia rotunda was evaluated using cell-based and cell-free approaches, with successful detection and enzymatic activity achieved through the PURE protein synthesis system. Molecular docking analysis revealed interactions between the substrate and BrPT2 at two cavities, suggesting cell-free protein synthesis as an alternative for rapid production of valuable difficult-to-express membrane proteins.

Chloroplast Genomes of Two Species of Cypripedium: Expanded Genome Size and Proliferation of AT-Biased Repeat Sequences

Yan-Yan Guo et al.

Summary: This study presented the sequencing, assembly and annotation of the chloroplast genomes of Cypripedium tibeticum and Cypripedium subtropicum, revealing their expanded genome size, low GC content, proliferation of AT-rich repeat sequences, and gene density. The increase in genome size is attributed to the proliferation of AT-biased non-coding regions, indicating a typical example of plastome expansion induced by non-coding regions in the genus. Hybrid assembly based on long and short reads is recommended for sequencing plastomes with AT-biased base composition.

Authentication of Zingiber Species Based on Analysis of Metabolite Profiles

Chenxi Wang et al.

Summary: This study compared Zingiber corallinum and Zingiber montanum through chloroplast genome sequencing and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis, finding that the chloroplast genome may not accurately identify the species. An untargeted metabolomics strategy was proposed to distinguish between the two Zingiber species using metabolic markers, and the performance of the approach was verified with unknown samples. The study suggests that the GC-MS based metabolic fingerprint is more promising for species identification and safe application of Z. corallinum and Z. montanum.

Comparison and Phylogenetic Analyses of Nine Complete Chloroplast Genomes of Zingibereae

Heng Liang et al.

Summary: The study investigated the plastome variation in nine species representing five genera of Zingibereae, confirming the relationship between Stahlianthus and Curcuma, and grouping Kaempferia, Boesenbergia, and Zingiber together as the Kaempferia group. Pyrgophyllum was found to be embedded within the Hedychium clade, not allied with the Curcuma clade. The findings demonstrate the power of plastid phylogenomics in improving phylogenetic relationships within Zingibereae.
