Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between meal timing and frequency with diet quality and prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MetS). The study found that increased frequency of eating occasions and snacks was associated with a higher prevalence of MetS. Additionally, when the frequency of eating occasions increased, the beneficial associations of diet quality were overshadowed.

Characterizing children's eating patterns: does the choice of eating occasion definition matter?

Rebecca M. Leech et al.

Summary: Background recommendations exist for defining eating occasions in adults, but not for children or adolescents. This study found that varying EO definitions affect the characterization of eating patterns in children and adolescents, with neutral definitions better predicting total energy intake variance and definitions distinguishing between meals and snacks better predicting BMI variance. Further international research is needed to establish a standard approach for EO definitions in children.
