Time to positivity of acute and chronic periprosthetic joint infection cultures

D. T. Talsma et al.

Summary: In acute periprosthetic joint infections (PJI), all isolates grew within 5 days, while chronic infections took 11 days. Sonication fluid showed the fastest positivity rate for chronic PJIs, but no difference was observed compared to tissue cultures for acute PJIs. Acute PJIs do not require prolonged incubation time, and there is no clear benefit observed for sonication.

Biofilm properties in relation to treatment outcome in patients with first-time periprosthetic hip or knee joint infection

Summary: This study found that strong biofilm production was significantly associated with increased antimicrobial resistance and PJI recurrence. In patients with first-time PJI infections, staphylococcal strains with strong biofilm production ability had a five-fold greater risk of recurrent infection.
