The human milk microbiome: who, what, when, where, why, and how?

Lisa F. Stinson et al.

Summary: Human milk contains a variety of microorganisms that play crucial roles in seeding infant gastrointestinal microbiome and impacting immune and metabolic development. Research on HM microbiota has increased, yet many questions remain unanswered. By comprehensively describing the composition, function, and origin of the HM microbiome, opportunities for further basic and applied research can be identified.

Sex-dependent modulation of immune development in mice by secretory IgA-coated Lactobacillus reuteri isolated from breast milk

Ce Qi et al.

Summary: This study investigated the probiotic role of breast milk-derived Lactobacillus reuteri FN041 in immune development in mice. Results showed that FN041 positively influenced intestinal immune barriers, especially in female mice, and regulated the expression of immunoglobulin A and related genes.

Crosstalk between sIgA-Coated Bacteria in Infant Gut and Early-Life Health

Mengfan Ding et al.

Summary: Transmission of gut microbiota from mother to offspring is of interest. The infant gut microbiota plays a role in immunity development, with sIgA coating bacteria potentially serving as disease signals. Variations in sIgA-coated bacteria are related to diseases in infants and adults, and could mediate immune responses.

Advanced glycosidases as ingenious biosynthetic instruments

Zuzana Meszaros et al.

Summary: Traditionally, glycosidases have been underutilized in industry, primarily used for cleaving unwanted carbohydrates, but with advancements in genetic engineering, they are now competitive synthetic tools capable of producing various chemicals, such as chitooligomers and glycosylated flavonoids. Exciting developments are on the horizon, including the production of human milk oligosaccharides and remodeled antibodies.
