Comprehensive evaluation of multisource aerosol optical depth gridded products over China

Daoyang Jiang et al.

Summary: This study evaluated aerosol optical depth (AOD) over China using different products and found that MODIS DB performed the best in overall accuracy and sample matching, while MERRA-2 performed the worst. Land cover type and elevation affected the applicability of different products.

Anthropogenic Emission Sources of Sulfate Aerosols in Hangzhou, East China: Insights from Isotope Techniques with Consideration of Fractionation Effects between Gas-to-Particle Transformations

Yu-Chi Lin et al.

Summary: Sulfate is a major component in atmospheric fine particles and plays a significant role in haze formation and climate change. This study measured the isotopic composition of sulfate in PM2.5 particles in Hangzhou, China, and found that the isotopic values were higher in winter due to lower temperatures. The study also compared source apportionments of sulfate with and without considering fractionation effects, and found that considering fractionation effects led to more logical results. Coal burning was identified as the dominant source of sulfate.

Air quality assessment in three East African cities using calibrated low-cost sensors with a focus on road-based hotspots

Ajit Singh et al.

Summary: This study highlights the poor air quality in East African cities, with high concentrations of particulate matter exceeding WHO limits. Road traffic is a major contributor to urban air pollution, impacting both outdoor and indoor air quality in buildings near roads. Mitigation strategies focusing on roads and traffic are needed to reduce air pollution exposure in these cities.

Global and regional variations in aerosol loading during COVID-19 imposed lockdown

S. D. Sanap

Summary: The study shows that during the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown, there was a reduction in aerosol loading over most global hotspots, with some regions like the Amazon, northern South America, Mexico, South-West Africa, and South East Asia experiencing abnormally high aerosol burdens due to wildfire emissions.

Revisiting the levels of Aerosol Optical Depth in south-southeast Asia, Europe and USA amid the COVID-19 pandemic using satellite observations

Prasenjit Acharya et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the impact of global economic shutdown on Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD) and found a significant reduction of AOD in majority areas during the lockdown period. However, clusters of increased AOD were observed in certain regions. Reductions in nitrogen dioxide (NO2) ranged from 20-40%, while sulfur dioxide (SO2) emissions increased up to 30% in most areas. Weekly anomaly showed notable space-time variation.

Interdecadal Changes in Aerosol Optical Depth over Pakistan Based on the MERRA-2 Reanalysis Data during 1980-2018

Rehana Khan et al.

Summary: The study investigated the spatiotemporal evolution and trends in aerosol optical depth (AOD) over environmentally distinct regions in Pakistan from 1980 to 2018, revealing significant seasonal variations in AOD across different regions and attributing the increase in AOD to population growth and emissions. The study also observed a significant decrease in AOD in the northern regions during winter and spring, while an increase in AOD over the central to lower Indus Basin is linked to dust particles from the desert. Furthermore, a comparison between the MERRA-2 and MODIS trends from 2002 to 2018 showed visible differences in AOD datasets due to the use of different versions and collection methods.

Long-term trends of satellite-based fine-mode aerosol optical depth over the Seto Inland Sea, Japan, over two decades (2001-2020)

Syuichi Itahashi et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the long-term trends of air pollution over the Seto Inland Sea in Japan, showing changes in AOD(f) values from 2001 to 2020, with a decrease especially after 2010. Aerosol pollution from long-range transport from the Asian continent also impacts pollution levels over the SIS. Reductions in aerosol pollution in 2020 can be attributed to the COVID-19 pandemic restrictions on human activity and regulations on SO2 emissions from ships.

Pascoal M. D. Campos et al.

Summary: This study aimed to propose a spatial distribution plan for air quality monitoring sites in the city of Luanda and to monitor the concentrations of PM2.5, PM10, NO2, SO2, and CO at two monitoring sites. Results showed differences in concentrations between the two sites, with particular attention to the weekend effect.
