A DAMP-scavenging, IL-10-releasing hydrogel promotes neural regeneration and motor function recovery after spinal cord injury

He Shen et al.

Summary: A dual-functional hydrogel scaffold was developed for treating SCI, scavenging DAMPs and releasing IL-10. In vitro and in vivo studies showed that this scaffold reduced proinflammatory responses, enhanced neurogenic differentiation, suppressed cytokine production, and promoted neural regeneration to a greater extent compared to control scaffolds.

Current Knowledge of Microglia in Traumatic Spinal Cord Injury

Lintao Xu et al.

Summary: Microglia undergo activation, proliferation, and changes in gene and protein expression and morphology after traumatic spinal cord injury (SCI), leading to both detrimental and beneficial effects. Understanding and regulating microglial activation status is crucial for reducing harmful effects, promoting repair, and developing effective therapies for SCI.

MicroRNA-22-3p alleviates spinal cord ischemia/reperfusion injury by modulating M2 macrophage polarization via IRF5

Hua Fang et al.

Summary: The study suggests that miR-22-3p may inhibit spinal cord I/R injury progression by repressing IRF5 in macrophages, which promotes M2 polarization and reduces inflammation, offering a potential new target for treatment.

Bone marrow mesenchymal stem cell-derived exosomal microRNA-125a promotes M2 macrophage polarization in spinal cord injury by downregulating IRF5

Qing Chang et al.

Summary: B-Exo promotes recovery of locomotor function and M2-phenotype polarization, inhibits neuronal apoptosis and degeneration, as well as the inflammatory response in rats with SCI. IRF5 expression is reduced after B-Exo treatment, and it promotes macrophage polarization towards M1 phenotype and secretion of inflammatory factors. There is a binding relationship between miR-125a and IRF5, with the knockdown of miR-125a in B-Exo leading to increased IRF5 expression and attenuation of the neuroprotective effect against SCI.

Hematogenous Macrophages: A New Therapeutic Target for Spinal Cord Injury

Yuanzhe Ding et al.

Summary: Spinal cord injury is a devastating disease causing loss of sensory and motor functions, with a pathological process involving mechanical primary injury and secondary injury. Macrophages play a crucial role in the pathology of SCI, and can be divided into different types. Hematogenous macrophages may have various roles in SCI but their specific function remains controversial.
