Summary: Multimodality treatment can improve the outcome of patients with malignant pleural mesothelioma. A case series of 17 patients treated with a combination of induction chemotherapy, surgery, adjuvant radiotherapy, and chemotherapy showed promising results, with a median overall survival of 32.1 months and a median progression-free survival of 23.7 months.

Current State of Pleural-Directed Adjuncts Against Malignant Pleural Mesothelioma

Summary: Malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) is a thoracic surface cancer without cure. Multimodality therapy, including surgical resection, is the current paradigm in treating MPM. However, the main limitation of surgical approaches is the lack of long-term durability due to frequent locoregional relapse. Various intrapleural strategies, such as intracavitary chemotherapy and photodynamic therapy, have been studied to extend the effect of surgical resection. Novel therapeutics delivered by specialized drug vehicles show great potential for improved efficacy in the management of MPM.

A multidisciplinary team in San Matteo hospital has been collecting data on over 100 MPM patients since 2018, aiming to define an integrated profile for each case at diagnosis. The study found that personalized treatment approaches based on gender and smoking history can lead to improved outcomes for MPM patients.
