Where greenspace matters most: A systematic review of urbanicity, greenspace, and physical health

Matthew H. E. M. Browning et al.

Summary: Greenspace in urban areas may have greater protective health effects than elsewhere. Urban dwellers experience more environmental harmful exposures, attentional demands, and stressors than their suburban/rural counterparts. Stronger greenspace-health associations in more urban areas might be explained in part by the mechanistic pathways underlying these associations.

Do health trajectories predict neighborhood outcomes? Evidence of health selection in a diverse sample of US adults

Lyndsey Rolheiser et al.

Summary: Research has found lower income neighborhoods to have poorer health outcomes, with a strong association between neighborhood poverty rates and health. Health selection into neighborhoods was observed across different race/ethnicity and class boundaries, with a stronger relationship between poor health and neighborhood poverty among non-Hispanic Black respondents, those with low income, and respondents who either moved moderate distances or did not move at all during the study period.

Stress recovery from virtual exposure to a brown (desert) environment versus a green environment

Jie Yin et al.

Summary: This study determines the effect of virtual reality exposure to a desert vs. green environment on human health. The findings suggest that exposure to the desert environment can reduce stress levels and average arterial pressure, which may be influenced by factors other than those proposed by psycho-evolutionary frameworks.

Associations of Residential Brownness and Greenness with Fasting Glucose in Young Healthy Adults Living in the Desert

Hector A. Olvera-Alvarez et al.

Summary: Evolutionary psychology theories suggest that contact with green natural environments may benefit physical health, but little similar evidence exists for brown natural environments such as deserts. This study found that residential proximity to greenness was associated with decreased levels of fasting glucose in a predominantly desert environment, while brownness was not associated with fasting glucose levels. The results suggest that green vegetation in desert areas may have health-promoting effects similar to those in other non-desert locations with higher levels of greenery.

Green mobility and obesity risk: A longitudinal analysis in California

Samantha Gailey et al.

Summary: This study utilized a longitudinal sibling-linked dataset to control for unmeasured stable characteristics and found that a positive change in neighborhood greenness is inversely associated with obesity risk. The results suggest that even small decreases in neighborhood greenness may have protective associations with obesity risk. If replicated, changing levels of greenness in the residential environment could potentially combat the rise of obesity.

Characteristics associated with downward residential mobility among birthing persons in California

Samantha Gailey et al.

Summary: This study shows an elevated risk of strong downward residential mobility among non-Hispanic Black and low-SES birthing persons, with Black birthing persons having over three times higher odds of downward mobility compared to white birthing persons. Factors such as low educational attainment, obesity, and preterm birth are also associated with strong downward mobility.

Summary: This study compared the differences in normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) among historical HOLC neighborhood grades in 2010, showing that areas with poorer investment risk grades assigned by HOLC in the 1930s are associated with lower present-day greenspace.
