Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and hepatocellular carcinoma: Clinical challenges of an intriguing link

Lampros Chrysavgis et al.

Summary: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the most common liver disorder worldwide, mainly attributed to the increasing prevalence of obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus. NAFLD can progress to non-alcoholic steatohepatitis, liver cirrhosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). This review focuses on the epidemiology, pathogenesis, risk factors, and prognosis of NAFLD-HCC patients. It highlights the underdiagnosis of NAFLD as an underlying liver disease for HCC and emphasizes the importance of prevention and appropriate surveillance policies for these patients.

Summary: This study found a high prevalence of fatty liver disease (FLD) among middle-aged Korean adults, with MAFLD having a significantly higher prevalence than NAFLD. Both NAFLD and MAFLD were associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD).

AGA Clinical Practice Update on Lifestyle Modification Using Diet and Exercise to Achieve Weight Loss in the Management of Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease: Expert Review

Zobair M. Younossi et al.

Summary: NAFLD is a leading cause of chronic liver disease globally, affecting over 25% of the population. Lifestyle modification for weight loss is the primary intervention for patients with NAFLD. Evidence-based interventions and best practice advice are provided for clinical management of NAFLD.

Differential Clinical Characteristics and Mortality Outcomes in Persons With NAFLD and/or MAFLD

Vy H. Nguyen et al.

Summary: The study found that individuals meeting the criteria for MAFLD had more comorbidities and worse prognosis compared to those with NAFLD only. Non-NAFLD MAFLD participants had the highest cumulative incidence of all-cause mortality, followed by NAFLD-MAFLD and non-MAFLD NAFLD participants. The MAFLD criteria should be considered in the general population to identify high-risk groups for early interventions.

SR-BI deficiency disassociates obesity from hepatic steatosis and glucose intolerance development in high fat diet-fed mice

Menno Hoekstra et al.

Summary: SR-BI deficiency in mice fed a high-fat diet was associated with increased weight gain but better glucose handling. Only SR-BI knockout mice developed atherosclerotic lesions in the aortic root, while showing decreased hepatic steatosis.

Genetics, Immunity and Nutrition Boost the Switching from NASH to HCC

Paola Dongiovanni et al.

Summary: Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the main contributor to chronic liver diseases globally, with potential progression from simple steatosis to nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) and eventually liver cancer. Various factors, including genetic and environmental factors, diet and lifestyle habits, can accelerate the worsening of the disease.

Caloric restriction or cafeteria diet from birth to adulthood increases the sensitivity to ephedrine in anxiety and locomotion in Wistar rats

Arthur Rocha-Gomes et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the nutritional status and behavioral responses of animals receiving different diets from birth, showing undernutrition in the CR group and obesity in the CAF group. Both groups exhibited lower anxiety-like behaviors after ephedrine application, indicating that the animal's nutritional status can enhance drug sensitivity.
