Sprouts and Microgreens-Novel Food Sources for Healthy Diets

Andreas W. Ebert

Summary: With the increasing interest in healthy eating, the global interest in fresh, ready-to-eat, functional food such as microscale vegetables (sprouted seeds and microgreens) has been on the rise. These crops range widely, with Brassica vegetables being highlighted for their health-promoting secondary metabolites. Furthermore, by adjusting factors like growing environment and growth substrate, the nutritional value and content of phytochemicals in microscale vegetables can be enhanced.

Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy as a Discriminatory Tool for Myotonic Dystrophy Type 1 Metabolism: A Pilot Study

Tiago Mateus et al.

Summary: Patients with DM1 have abnormal lipid metabolism and a high propensity to develop metabolic syndrome, thus metabolome evaluation is crucial for better characterization and discrimination between different DM1 disease phenotypes. FTIR spectroscopy can be used to evaluate metabolic profiles and discriminate between DM1 patients with different characteristics, such as CTG repeat length and age of disease onset. The study showed clear discrimination between different DM1-derived fibroblasts based on their distinct metabolic profiles in the 1800-1500 cm(-1) region.

Garlic (Allium sativum)-derived SEVs inhibit cancer cell proliferation and induce caspase mediated apoptosis

Irem Ozkan et al.

Summary: The study found that garlic-derived SEVs can induce apoptotic cell death in cancer cells while having no effect on normal cells. Additionally, garlic SEVs significantly reduce the expression levels of angiogenic VEGF protein in cancer cells. This reveals the potential of garlic-derived SEVs as a new anti-cancer treatment option.
