Simultaneous reduction and sequestration of hexavalent chromium by magnetic β-Cyclodextrin stabilized Fe3S4

Long Kong et al.

Summary: In this study, CD-modified Fe3S4 nanomaterials were synthesized and investigated for the removal of Cr(VI). The results showed that CD-Fe3S4 exhibited enhanced removal efficiency and high selectivity for Cr(VI). It could maintain good performance under oxic conditions and a wide pH range. Moreover, CD-Fe3S4 effectively removed chromium from actual electroplating wastewater to a level far below the WHO limitation, and could be rapidly separated without adjusting the pH value. The study demonstrated the potential application of CD-Fe3S4 as an effective material for Cr(VI) removal.

Cadmium adsorption performance and mechanism from aqueous solution using red mud modified with amorphous MnO2

Yin Pang et al.

Summary: In this study, red mud modified by manganese dioxide (MRM) was used as an effective adsorbent for removing Cd2+ from aqueous solutions. The MRM had a larger specific surface area and pore volume compared to ordinary red mud (RM). The adsorption experiments showed that the equilibrium adsorption capacity of MRM for Cd2+ was significantly higher than that of RM. The kinetic and thermodynamic studies suggested that the adsorption process was controlled by a pseudo-second-order kinetic model and was heat-trapping and spontaneous. XPS and FTIR analyses indicated that the adsorption mechanisms involved electrostatic attachment, specific adsorption, and ion exchange. Therefore, MRM could be a promising and cost-effective alternative for Cd2+ removal in wastewater treatment.

Pyrogallic acid modified nanoscale zero-valent iron efficiently removed Cr (VI) by improving adsorption and electron selectivity

Jiaxin Wen et al.

Summary: In this study, pyrogallic acid was introduced into the synthesis process of nanoscale zero-valent iron, leading to the creation of a new catalyst called pyrogallic acid-nanoscale zero-valent iron (pyGA-nZVI). The material successfully removed Cr(VI) with high efficiency, especially in a wide pH range. The modification of pyrogallic acid improved the electron transfer of nZVI and reduced the charge transfer resistance. This research provides a new strategy for utilizing polyphenols to synthesize highly reactive nZVI for Cr(VI) removal.

Summary: This paper discusses recent trends in using carbonaceous materials and nanomaterials for adsorption of Chromium, Copper, Lead, and Mercury in wastewater. The adsorption capacity depends on various factors such as adsorbent modification technique, initial pH, dosage, contact time, and initial concentration. AC, BC, nZVI, and MXene can achieve high removal efficiencies. AC and BC have higher surface area, while nZVI and MXene have higher reactivity and regeneration capacity. Future studies need to focus on practical application, cost analysis, regeneration capability, and reuse of heavy metals.
