Sub-bandgap light absorption enhancement in germanium films through Berreman mode weak coupling to a microcavity mode

Hossam A. Almossalami et al.

Summary: The study investigates sub-bandgap light absorption in germanium films through Berreman mode and its enhancement by weak coupling to Fabry-Perot cavity mode. By integrating the semiconductor film into a microcavity structure and tuning its resonance frequency, significant light absorption at large incidence angles can be achieved, providing a novel and simple method to enhance the optical and optoelectronic responses of any ENZ material.

Photon Acceleration Using a Time-Varying Epsilon-near-Zero Metasurface

Cong Liu et al.

Summary: The study found that using a metasurface made of a plasmonic antenna array on a thin indium tin oxide (ITO) can change the frequency of a light beam through self-action effect. Experimentally, it was observed that optical excitation of a 92 nm thick metasurface led to an intensity-dependent blueshift of the excitation pulse, with an energy requirement up to 200 times lower than using ITO alone.

All-optical phase control in nanophotonic silicon waveguides with epsilon-near-zero nanoheaters

Jorge Parra et al.

Summary: The study explores the unique light-matter interaction of epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) materials for all-optical phase control in nanophotonic silicon waveguides. By using ENZ materials as an efficient optical heat source, thermo-optic all-optical phase tuning is achieved with low insertion loss and high control efficiency. This proposal offers a new approach to achieve on-chip, low-loss phase tuning in silicon photonic circuits.

Dependence of the coupling properties between a plasmonic antenna array and a sub-wavelength epsilon-near-zero film on structural and material parameters

Karapet Manukyan et al.

Summary: This numerical study investigates the linear optical response of a plasmonic dipole antenna array in combination with an epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) thin film. It shows that the antenna array properties can be strongly or weakly influenced by the coupling with the ENZ film, and the presence of low-loss ENZ films can make the lower polariton branch visible. Additionally, thick, lossy ENZ films may result in the lower polariton branch being unobservable.

Comparison Study of Multi-Slot Designs in Epsilon-Near-Zero Waveguide-Based Electro-Optical Modulators

Yanhua Sha et al.

Summary: The research found that indium tin oxide slots in multi-slot waveguide modulators at 1.55 μm wavelength can enhance optical confinement, leading to high extinction ratio and low insertion loss. By optimizing geometric parameters, the performance of the four types of slot modulators can be further improved for use in designing high-performance on-chip modulators for optical communication and ultrafast data processing.

Gate Tunable Coupling of Epsilon-Near-Zero and Plasmonic Modes

Dipa Ghindani et al.

Summary: This work demonstrates the active tuning of coupling strength in a strongly coupled system comprised of a thin epsilon-near-zero material and gold nanorods. A novel gating scheme using an ionic liquid is developed to bias the system and tune the coupling in transmission mode, resulting in a significant tuning of the coupled resonance up to 30 nm by changing bias voltages from 0 to 4.5 V. This control mechanism on strong coupling offers exciting opportunities for various disruptive applications by providing advanced control and tunability.
