Life and death in the soil microbiome: how ecological processes influence biogeochemistry

Noah W. Sokol et al.

Summary: Soil microorganisms play a critical role in global biogeochemical cycles, and their metabolic functions are influenced by ecological interactions and the surrounding environment. Understanding microbial life and death can help predict soil biogeochemical dynamics.

Soil fauna groups respond differentially to changes in crop rotation cycles in rice production systems

Katharina John et al.

Summary: Conversion of permanently flooded rice cropping to rotation systems with adaptive nitrogen fertilizer application schemes is altering the diversity and composition of soil fauna, particularly increasing the abundance of microarthropods in permanently non-flooded rotations. The impact of N fertilizer is significant, affecting the trophic composition of the soil micro-food web.

Effects of drying on the structural characteristics and antioxidant activities of polysaccharides from Stropharia rugosoannulata

Qi Wang et al.

Summary: Different drying methods were used on Stropharia rugosoannulata to investigate the structural characteristics and antioxidant activities of two types of neutral polysaccharides and two types of acidic polysaccharides. Hot-air drying was found to alter the structural configuration and enhance the antioxidant activity of the polysaccharides, with hot-air dried polysaccharides exhibiting stronger antioxidant properties.

Comparison of soil acidification rates under different land uses in Indonesia

Kazumichi Fujii et al.

Summary: The study shows that nitrification is a major driver of soil acidification in Acacia plantation or fertilized oil palm plantation. Soil organic matter accumulated under Imperata grassland or Macaranga forest can partially neutralize the acidity generated by nitrification, mitigating soil acidification in these areas.
