Anthropometric Parameters of Children with Congenital Zika Virus Exposure in the First Three Years of Life

Elisa Barroso de Aguiar et al.

Summary: This prospective cohort study found that congenital Zika virus exposure has a significant impact on the growth and development of infants. Children with congenital Zika syndrome exhibited severe and early growth deficits in the first three years of life, while those without congenital Zika syndrome showed normal growth according to WHO standards.

Comparison of Oropharyngeal Dysphagia in Brazilian Children with Prenatal Exposure to Zika Virus, With and Without Microcephaly

Danielle Maria da Silva Oliveira et al.

Summary: This study found that oropharyngeal dysphagia (OPD) is more frequently present in children with severe brain damage associated with Zika-related microcephaly, compared to children with mild or undetectable abnormalities from prenatal Zika virus exposure. Children with microcephaly also showed more anatomic and functional abnormalities in the stomatognathic system. There was a high agreement between caregiver reports of OPD and clinical swallowing assessment, indicating the importance of caregiver reports in diagnosing OPD and referring children for rehabilitation.

Endocrine Dysfunction in Children with Zika-Related Microcephaly Who Were Born during the 2015 Epidemic in the State of Pernambuco, Brazil

Andreia Veras Goncalves et al.

Summary: The study confirmed the presence of various endocrine dysfunctions in children with severe Zika-related microcephaly, including short stature, hypothyroidism, obesity, and early puberty variants. These dysfunctions require careful monitoring and endocrinological evaluation to provide early diagnosis and appropriate treatment.

Congenital Zika syndrome: Growth, clinical, and motor development outcomes up to 36 months of age and differences according to microcephaly at birth

Tamires Barradas Cavalcante et al.

Summary: The study compared the growth and development outcomes of children with CZS born with and without microcephaly up to their third birthday. Children born without microcephaly showed faster head circumference growth in early stages, and were less likely to have brain damage, ophthalmic abnormalities, and drug-resistant epilepsy. However, differences between the two groups tended to diminish with age.

The Microcephaly Epidemic Research Group Paediatric Cohort (MERG-PC): A Cohort Profile

Democrito de Barros Miranda-Filho et al.

Summary: This cohort profile describes the ongoing follow-up of children in the Microcephaly Epidemic Research Group Paediatric Cohort (MERG-PC), providing comprehensive clinical, laboratory, and imaging assessments for children born in the epicentre of the microcephaly epidemic in Brazil. The cohort has contributed to the understanding of the congenital Zika syndrome (CZS) spectrum, including neurodevelopment, epilepsy, dysphagia, cryptorchidism, endocrine dysfunction, and adenoid hypertrophy in children with Zika-related microcephaly. Sharing study protocols and questionnaires across Brazilian states has enabled harmonization across studies, leading to the formation of the Zika Brazilian Cohorts Consortium uniting all ZIKV clinical cohorts in Brazil.

Zika Brazilian Cohorts (ZBC) Consortium: Protocol for an Individual Participant Data Meta-Analysis of Congenital Zika Syndrome after Maternal Exposure during Pregnancy

Maria das Gracas Costa Alecrim et al.

Summary: The Brazilian Zika Cohorts Consortium aims to address knowledge gaps related to congenital Zika manifestations through harmonizing data from multiple studies. By conducting IPD meta-analyses, the consortium will provide more precise estimates of the absolute risk of congenital Zika manifestations and investigate sources of heterogeneity between studies and regions.
