Animal-source foods as a suitable complementary food for improved physical growth in 6 to 24-month-old children in low- and middle-income countries: a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials

Hannah Asare et al.

Summary: A systematic review and meta-analysis found that animal-source foods are a suitable complementary food for promoting growth in 6 to 24-month-old children in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Animal-based food supplementation led to increased length-for-age and weight-for-age Z-scores, with even greater effects observed when the supplementation was based on eggs.

Poor haemoglobin-haematocrit agreement in apparently healthy adult population; a cross-sectional study in Cape Coast Metropolis, Ghana

Grace Ali-Baya et al.

Summary: This study in adults in a tropical environment found a poor correlation between haemoglobin and haematocrit, as well as a prevalence of low total body water. The findings suggest that measuring plasma volume and/or haemoglobin mass may be necessary for accurate diagnosis of anaemia.

Infant Anthropometry and Growth Velocity Before 6 Months are Associated with Breastfeeding Practices and the Presence of Subclinical Mastitis and Maternal Intestinal Protozoa in Indigenous Communities in Guatemala

Hilary M. Wren-Atilola et al.

Summary: High Na:K ratio, individual nonpathogenic protozoa, specific breastfeeding and hygiene practices were associated with impaired growth before 6 wk and at 4-6 mo in exclusively breastfed infants. Prevention of subclinical mastitis and nonpathogenic protozoa, feeding colostrum, and improving hygiene practices are important for minimizing infant growth faltering.

Iron deficiency in infancy: current insights

Staffan K. Berglund et al.

Summary: Recent studies have explored the metabolism of iron in infants and the effects of iron supplementation on different populations. It has been found that reducing iron deficiency is beneficial for neurodevelopment, but excess iron intake may have adverse effects, such as diarrhea and poor neurodevelopment. Recommendations include delayed cord clamping and supplementation for at-risk infants, while iron supplementation for pregnant women has limited effects on offspring, supporting exclusive breastfeeding until 6 months.

Summary: This study assessed the prevalence of low symphysis-fundal height in indigenous Panamanian women and explored its associations with factors such as nutrient deficiencies and inflammation, highlighting its potential for early detection of multicausal in utero growth faltering.

Summary: The study found that SCM, nonpathogenic protozoa, specific breastfeeding and hygiene practices were associated with growth faltering in exclusively breastfed infants before 6 weeks and at 4-6 months. Growth velocity for weight was negatively associated with Entamoeba coli, while cranial growth was positively associated with lodamoeba biitschlii. Feeding colostrum in early lactation was protective and decreased the odds of low head circumference.
