Efficacy of Vitamin D Supplements in Prevention of Acute Respiratory Infection: A Meta-Analysis for Randomized Controlled Trials

Hae-Eun Cho et al.

Summary: This meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials found that vitamin D supplementation has no clinical effect in the prevention of acute respiratory infections. However, daily supplementation and short-term supplementation may be effective, but these beneficial effects disappear in high-quality studies.

Influence of Vitamin D Supplementation by Simulated Sunlight or Oral D3 on Respiratory Infection during Military Training

Sophie E. Harrison et al.

Summary: The results of two studies suggest that vitamin D sufficiency can reduce the risk of upper respiratory tract infections during military training. Vitamin D supplementation strategies have similar effects in increasing vitamin D levels, significantly reducing the severity of respiratory infection symptoms and days with colds.

Dietary Supplements during COVID-19 Outbreak. Results of Google Trends Analysis Supported by PLifeCOVID-19 Online Studies

Jadwiga Hamulka et al.

Summary: The use of dietary supplements (DSs) increased globally during the COVID-19 outbreak in 2020, mainly for enhancing immunity. Most respondents started supplementation during the first wave of the pandemic rather than the second. While there is evidence supporting the role of certain nutrients in patients with deficiencies, there is limited clear evidence for the role of DSs in preventing and treating COVID-19 in healthy individuals.

Summary: The study reveals that there were no additional benefits of vitamin A supplementation in preventing or recovering from acute respiratory infections in children. Excessive vitamin A supplementation might actually increase the incidence of ARTI in well-nourished children.

Zinc for the prevention or treatment of acute viral respiratory tract infections in adults: a rapid systematic review and meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials

Jennifer Hunter et al.

Summary: In adult populations, zinc formulations such as oral or intranasal zinc may help prevent respiratory tract infections, while sublingual zinc may not prevent clinical colds. Zinc formulations may aid in symptom relief and shorten illness duration, but could also lead to non-serious adverse events. Further research is needed due to limitations in the evidence quality.

Vitamin D supplementation to prevent acute respiratory infections: a systematic review and meta-analysis of aggregate data from randomised controlled trials

David A. Jolliffe et al.

Summary: Vitamin D supplementation was found to be safe and reduce the risk of acute respiratory infections, especially when administered in daily doses of 400-1000 IU for up to 12 months and to participants aged 1.00-15.99 years. However, the relevance of these findings to COVID-19 is uncertain and further investigation is needed.

Adjuvant Effect of Orally Applied Preparations Containing Non-Digestible Polysaccharides on Influenza Vaccination in Healthy Seniors: A Double-Blind, Randomised, Controlled Pilot Trial

Christiane Laue et al.

Summary: This study investigated the potential of non-digestible polysaccharide (NPS) preparations to enhance immune response in aged individuals. Results suggest that arabinoxylan (AX) may enhance influenza vaccine efficacy and reduce the incidence of common colds. Further research is warranted to explore AX as an oral adjuvant for vaccine support.

Elderberry for prevention and treatment of viral respiratory illnesses: a systematic review

L. Susan Wieland et al.

Summary: This study conducted a systematic review on the benefits and harms of elderberry in the treatment and prevention of viral respiratory infections. Findings suggest that elderberry may reduce the duration of influenza and is associated with a lower risk of influenza complications and adverse events compared to oseltamivir. However, there is no evidence on elderberry and clinical outcomes related to inflammation.
