The subthalamic corticotropin-releasing hormone neurons mediate adaptive REM-sleep responses to threat

Yu-Ting Tseng et al.

Summary: This study found that animals are rapidly aroused from REM sleep when facing threats, in contrast to NREM sleep. Neurons in the medial subthalamic nucleus expressing corticotropin-releasing hormone were identified as being responsible for mediating arousal and defensive responses to predator threats during sleep and wakefulness. These findings suggest that REM sleep responses are adaptive and may have a protective function against threats.

Functional analysis of distinct populations of subthalamic nucleus neurons on Parkinson's disease and OCD-like behaviors in mice

Luca Parolari et al.

Summary: The study anatomically characterized molecular markers for specific STN neurons, revealing Pitx2, Gabrr3, Ndnf, and Nos1 expression. Optogenetic studies showed that Gabrr3 neurons play a key role in mediating the beneficial effects of STN modulation, serving as potential cellular targets for PD and OCD drug discovery.

Illuminating Neural Circuits in Alzheimer's Disease

Yang Ying et al.

Summary: Alzheimer's disease is the most common neurodegenerative disorder with no cure currently available. Dysfunction in neural circuits is the main mechanism behind the learning and memory deficits in AD patients. Understanding the structural features and mechanisms of deregulated circuits during AD progression is crucial for developing new tools for intervention. New experimental approaches and key techniques have been established to trace and manipulate neural circuits, aiding in the discovery of circuit mechanisms underlying beta-amyloid and tau pathologies in AD progression, as well as in the development of targeted treatments.
