Physicochemical, structural, mechanical and antioxidant properties of zein films incorporated with no-ultrafiltered and ultrafiltered betalains extract from the beetroot (Beta vulgaris) bagasse with potential application as active food packaging

Francisco Rodriguez-Felix et al.

Summary: This study investigated the influence of betalain extract from beet bagasse on the physicochemical, structural, mechanical, and antioxidant properties of zein films. The results showed that the addition of betalain extract improved the uniformity and smoothness of the film surface, increased the degradation temperature, and enhanced hydrophobicity. Furthermore, the betalain extract exhibited good antioxidant activity. Therefore, incorporating betalain extract into zein films has potential applications in the food industry as active food packaging.

A colorimetric indicator based on copper nanoparticles for volatile sulfur compounds to monitor fish spoilage in intelligent packaging

Zahra Teymouri et al.

Summary: A colorimetric indicator based on copper nanoparticles was developed for detecting volatile sulfur compounds during fish spoilage. The indicator showed excellent selectivity towards sulfur compounds and had a sensitive and irreversible response. It can be used as a simple and low-cost method for real-time monitoring of fish spoilage.

Discrimination of spoiled beef and salmon stored under different atmospheres by an optoelectronic nose. Comparison with GC-MS measurements

Pauline Claus et al.

Summary: The aim of this study was to evaluate the capacity of an electronic nose, the NeOse Pro, to assess the alteration of two food matrixes of animal origin, beef and salmon. The results of NeOse Pro and GC-MS analysis were consistent in evaluating the spoilage level of the food samples stored under different conditions.

Covalent immobilization of bromocresol purple on cellulose nanocrystals for use in pH-responsive indicator films

Hossein Khanjanzadeh et al.

Summary: This study successfully developed pH-indicator films with sensitivity to pH changes, color reversibility, and leaching resistance. Even as the content of e-CNC/a-BCP increased from 0% to 15%, the mechanical properties of the films decreased.

Colorimetric ammonia (NH3) sensor based on an alginate-methylcellulose blend hydrogel and the potential opportunity for the development of a minced pork spoilage indicator

Sutthira Sutthasupa et al.

Summary: Hydrogels based on alginate and methylcellulose were developed as a colorimetric indicator for monitoring minced pork spoilage. The hydrogel showed tunable water uptake capacity and compression strength proportional to alginate content. Results demonstrated the hydrogel's potential application as a spoilage indicator in intelligent packaging, showing a correlation between color change, TVB-N, and pH change in minced pork.
