Mineralized Polyvinyl Alcohol/Sodium Alginate Hydrogels Incorporating Cellulose Nanofibrils for Bone and Wound Healing

Ragab E. Abouzeid et al.

Summary: Bio sustainable hydrogels provide an effective strategy for designing innovative systems to enhance the healing and regeneration processes of damaged tissue areas. In this study, TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanofibrils (T-CNFs) were embedded in alginate and polyvinyl alcohol solution to form a stable mineralized hydrogel. The calcium chloride reaction was optimized to trigger a crosslinking reaction of polymer chains and in situ mineralization of calcium phosphates. The morphological, chemical, and physical properties of different mineralized hybrid hydrogels were investigated, showing differences in the deposited crystalline nanostructures under different pH conditions. In vitro tests confirmed the low cytotoxicity of the mineralized hybrid hydrogels and a significant increase in cell viability for the low concentration, crosslinked Alg/PVA/calcium phosphate hybrid materials in the presence of hydroxyapatite. These preliminary results suggest a promising use of mineralized hybrid hydrogels for bone and wound healing applications based on Alg/PVA/T-CNFs.

Fluorescent chitosan-based hydrogel incorporating titanate and cellulose nanofibers modified with carbon dots for adsorption and detection of Cr(VI)

Qiuyan Luo et al.

Summary: A novel fluorescent chitosan-based hydrogel incorporating titanate and cellulose nanofibers modified with carbon dots was prepared to effectively detect and remove Cr(VI). The hydrogel showed a high adsorption capacity for Cr(VI) along with good sensing abilities, enabling quantitative detection within a linear range. Analysis revealed that the excellent sorption and sensing capabilities were mainly attributed to the porous structures and the modification of carbon dots.

Carbon Adsorbents from Spent Coffee for Removal of Methylene Blue and Methyl Orange from Water

Inga Block et al.

Summary: Activated carbons prepared from dried spent coffee grounds are effective for dye adsorption, with treatments using either aqueous sodium hydroxide solutions or calcium carbonate powder as activators. Mixtures of spent coffee grounds and CaCO3 yield efficient activated carbons for removing methyl orange and methylene blue, without selective adsorption towards anionic or cationic dyes.

Rauf Foroutan et al.

Summary: In this study, magnetic composites (CNT/MnFe2O4 and CNT/beta-CD/MnFe2O4) were successfully synthesized using carbon nanotubes (CNT) and beta-cyclodextrin (CD) for the removal of tetracycline (TC) antibiotics from water. The synthesized magnetic composites exhibited higher specific active surface area and showed effective removal of TC from various aqueous solutions, following different adsorption isotherm models. The research indicates promising potential of CNT-based magnetic composites as adsorbents for TC removal processes in water treatment.
