Hierarchical microstructures enabled excellent low-temperature strength-ductility synergy in bulk pure tungsten

X. F. Xie et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates a practical route to achieve an attractive combination of low-temperature ductility and high strength in pure tungsten through a multi-scale microstructure modulation strategy. The hierarchical microstructures in the bulk pure tungsten, including lamellar elongated matrix grains, interior fine sub-grains, and mobile edge and mixed dislocations, contribute to the remarkable tensile ductility and high strength, especially at low temperatures. The shielding and blunting effects from low-angle grain boundaries and highly mobile dislocations, as well as the delamination toughening effect of the lamellar structure, are the main mechanisms behind the improved properties.

The brittle-to-ductile transition of pure tungsten processed by closed dual equal channel angular pressing process

Kemin Xue et al.

Summary: The deformation behavior of pure tungsten during closed dual equal channel angular pressing (CDECAP) was studied to understand the influence of microstructure changes on the brittle-to-ductile transition (DBT). It was found that a fine-grained microstructure with high fraction of low-angle grain boundaries, more edge dislocations, and a specific crystal texture was developed in pure tungsten during the CDECAP process. After 3 passes, the brittle-to-ductile transition temperature (DBTT) of pure tungsten significantly decreased. The results indicate that grain boundaries, dislocations, and crystal texture play important roles in controlling the ductility of pure tungsten during CDECAP.

The heterogeneity of dynamic recrystallization and texture evolution in stirring zone of Al-Mg-Sc alloy

J. Xie et al.

Summary: Friction stir processing (FSP) is a potential method for improving the mechanical properties of alloys. In this study, grinding stirring processing (GSP) was used to isolate the effect of the shoulder. The GSP tool formed discontinuous dynamic recrystallization (DDRX) cores and deformation bands throughout the processing zone. Analysis of the observed objects in the stirring zone of FSP showed that the frequency of grains with an aspect ratio >1.8 was positively correlated with the frequency of DDRX. The distribution of aspect ratio revealed that continuous dynamic recrystallization (CDRX) was dominant, and its frequency increased with distance from the top. Texture analysis indicated that Goss texture favored CDRX.

Improved fracture behavior and microstructural characterization of heterogeneous-structured tungsten

Haosen Ning et al.

Summary: The study reports an improved ductility of heterogeneous-structured pure tungsten produced by hot-rolling and partial recrystallization. The crack propagation path plays a crucial role in improving ductility, with transgranular fracture preferred in regions with elongated grains and intergranular fracture dominating when cracks extend to blocky recrystallized grains. The synergistic effect of transgranular and intergranular fracture modes increases the total work to fracture, thus enhancing ductility.

Plastic deformation of ITER specification tungsten: Temperature and strain rate dependent constitutive law deduced by inverse finite element analysis

Aleksandr Zinovev et al.

Summary: In this study, a constitutive law describing the elasto-plastic response of tungsten was derived using inverse finite element analysis (IFEA) to understand deformation beyond the onset of instability in tensile tests. A model based on thermally-activated dislocation-mediated plasticity was applied to accurately characterize the mechanical response of tungsten compliant with ITER specifications, demonstrating the ability to extrapolate the hardening law to a wider temperature and strain rate range. One advantage of this method is its applicability to neutron irradiated materials with low uniform elongation.

Close-up tracing of fatigue precrack evolution and reliable fracture toughness evaluation by the precracked specimens in an ITER specification W plate

Kazutoshi Tokunaga et al.

Summary: This study investigated the fracture toughness of tungsten (W) materials under fatigue loading with different orientations, revealing significant differences in crack initiation and propagation behavior. Results showed that the anisotropic variation in fracture toughness of the W plate is relatively small, with the fracture path being entirely transgranular for one orientation and involving intergranular fracture to a large extent for another orientation.

Impact of neutron irradiation on hardening of baseline and advanced tungsten grades and its link to initial microstructure

Chao Yin et al.

Summary: Six tungsten grades were irradiated at different temperatures and doses to investigate the irradiation-induced hardening through Vickers hardness tests. Most materials showed an increase in Vickers hardness as the irradiation temperature increased from 600 to 1000 degrees Celsius, except for ZrC-reinforced tungsten. The hardening in TiC-strengthened material progressively increased with irradiation temperature, not solely explained by the accumulation of neutron irradiation defects.

Microstructure evolution and mechanical responses of Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloys during hot deformation process

Yue Guo et al.

Summary: Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloys can be processed by thermo-mechanical methods for applications in aeronautic, automobile, and marine industries. Achieving a balance between high strength and favorable ductility is still a ongoing challenge, with temperature and strain rate being key external variables. The complexity of microstructure evolution during hot deformation plays a crucial role in determining the mechanical responses and performance of these alloys.
